could see this one coming from a million miles away.

At this point, quarterback is again a concern, because no one knows if JaMarcus Russell is ready to take over the starting job. There are rumors that he's close to 300 pounds and not exactly prepared for his close-up.

Yeah I read it already but thanks. Also this is the dumbest crap ever. He say in one sentence it is rumor he has blown up to 300 pounds and thats it. No sources, no explanation, no responding from raiders. Another media hater of Al Davis and the raiders starting rumors as usual. U shouldnt be helping spread the rumor.

SI.com is right way more than they are wrong. Guys like Jamarcus and Lendale will always battle the bulge as they dont take conditioning seriously as this juncture in their careers. getting by on just talent.

Wait a second.....Russells playing weight is like 265...so if he's pushing 300 he's only gained 30 lbs tops....30 lbs is not a huge offseason gain for someone who goes 265 to start with.

Anybody can take the money and go south like Aaron Brooks, etc but i would think it would be very unlikely Russell starts this season in anything other than prize fighting condition.Thats the kind of player he was 3 yrs ago, i sure hope he hasnt let the money F him up........

RUMOR OF RUSSELL WEIGHT GAIN DISPUTED

In response to our posting of a rumor from Don Banks of SI.com that Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell is closing in on 300 pounds, a league source says that Russell isn't close to 300 pounds, and that his weight is south of 275.

Russell's listed weight is 255.

Last year, Russell caused a mini-stir at the Scouting Combine when he weighed in at a flabby 265 pounds.

Sacramento Bee -- Raiders Blog and Q&A

Odds and ends

For a team that was 4-12 in 2007, the Raiders continue to generate a lot of rumors and fodder for jokes.

The latest is rumors JaMarcus Russell is tipping the scale at 300 pounds.

I spoke with someone close to Russell that said that’s not true and that Russell is a lot closer to the 260 pounds or so he finished the season at than anywhere near 300.

*I caught Def Comedy Jam after watching the series finale of The Wire. Even D.L. Hughley had jokes about the Raiders.

Imagine how much talk the team would generate with a winning record.

*I attended part of the Commitment to Excellence dinner and spoke with Justin Fargas, the 2007 season winner.

He’s in good shape and ready to join his teammates for the offseason program later this month.

Fargas is also starting a scholarship program to send deserving students to his old high school, Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, Calif.

(Note: Great athletes can get a great education for free at Long Beach Poly. Yes, that was a shameless plug).

A lot of critics have ripped the Raiders’ signing of Fargas, but I think it was a good decision. He’s had injury problems in the past, but he sprained his knee last season and isn’t coming off surgery.

I don’t think a sprained knee is cause for concern like a torn ACL would be.

*Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was in attendance sporting his new haircut. His hair no longer is all the way on his shoulders, but should grow back in time for training camp.

*New WR coach James Lofton is still in good shape. I hear he used to run routes with the receivers in San Diego.

people love to hate on the raiders and people love to hate JaMarcus.

I love to make fun of teams that sign defensive tackles coming off torn ACL's to 7 year 50 million dollar contracts. If that team happens to be the Raiders, so be it.

<!-- T13355957 --><!-- Sesame Modified: 05/06/2010 15:59:13 --><!-- sversion: 1 $Updated: georgem$ -->ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have released former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell after three unproductive and highly paid seasons.
Senior executive John Herrera told the Associated Press the move was made Thursday and that "we wish him well."
The decision comes less than two weeks after Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington to take over at quarterback.
Russell will now likely be considered the biggest draft bust in NFL history. He will have been paid more than $39 million by the Raiders, while producing only seven wins as a starter.
He lost his starting job midway through last season. His career has been hampered by a rookie holdout, poor work habits, being overweight and the lack of productive players around him.
