This is my half-baked idea from years ago that never came cause in hawaii we don't even know what powerball is....

I assume tickets are $1 each? can someone tell me the different combinations available? (for some reason, in my mind I have around 100M-150M combinations)

let's say for argument 125,000,000 combinations.....

who is to stop you from buying 125,000,000 different tickets.....

Here we go.....

230,000,000 in winnings
(125,000,000) in ticket expenses
(31,250,000) I figure i pay 1,250 people $25,000 each to buy 100,000 tickets (hell, i would do that for $25,000)
___________

73,750,000 in net winnings
(25,812,500) fed taxes (used 35%)
(6,084,375) state taxes (used 8.25%)
__________

$41,853,125 cash after taxes for me to do whatever

The only problem is getting a $160M loan from the bank (and the slim chance I have to split the winnings....and not sure if $230M is lump sum or an annuity)....someone hook me up! this post is my business plan.

you also forgot that when you take the lump sum they take a huge chunk away from you, something close to 50 %...so you would want to be paid over 30 yrs...still only a semi-crazy plan...i thought of that years ago, but for some reason my friends didn't want to help me out, i wonder why....

What happens if 3 other people have your number though? That's alot of risk...

If this made sense then groups of millionares would be pooling their money together to do it. The lotto takes way too much of the lump sum and inflation would destroy yearly payments.

I acknowledged both of these thoughts in my disclaimer....

....my only reason for not giving up is I do not know what the actual odds are and actual payment plan

It is definitely possible at some level....but how big does the jackpot have to get?

and the split the money scenario is tough....that might be the reason a bank won't fork out the loan....but if the jackpot is at 2x the break-even point, I would take the gamble

when you start looking at what states are taxed at and what states are eligible combined with your capital loss carryover and your bank loan payments vs. annuity and int. rate (deductible)....I think there are many factors.

i think this use to happen with large companies buying all the combinations. I remember 1 draw back was that the machine could not spit out all the tickets fast enough, i believe now though there is a rule in place that you can only buy a certain amount of tickets now for 1 drawing, like 100,000.

Thanks for the heads-up. I don't follow it closely, but pick up a few tickets when the jackpot gets larger.

I'm not feeling this one, but that may be good, since I "lost" the times "I've felt it"

I walk by the lottery place every day, a few times a day, there's been a line of at least 5-10 people all day.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 146.1 million.

On an interesting and related note, the "break even" point for winning expectation (expected value of a $1 ticket being $1 or more) is when the jackpot reaches $242 million.
Any higher than that and you have a +EV buying lottery tickets! :toast:

But when the pot is big, you often get more than 1 winner. I think the pot would have to about a billion to have value.

LUCKY CHINESE NUMBERS 8-9-24-31-32-40

I heard this awhile back i assume its true. 1 time the NY state lottery was hit....by like 190 ppl!!!!! They were sure something was wrong as they had never had more than 2 or 3 tops split the pot before. They withheld payments while they investigated and.....all 190 ppl had at ate at the same chinese restaraunt and played the same lucky numbers !!!!!!
