I am looking to make some extra money on the side. I was thinking of trying bartending. I don't have any experience, should I try one of those bartending schools? Does anyone have any advice? Again, I'm just looking for maybe one shift a week, I have a primary job. At least in Jersey it's no smoking so I don't have to deal with the second hand smoke.
Thanks

Everyone I've talked to who has gone to bartending school has said it's a waste of money. It's extremely difficult to get a bartending job. Be prepared to work at a different spot at the place for at least a few months before they'll even let you bartend. My buddy had to work over a year at a freakin Red Robin before they let him bartend. Great money, but everyone wants to do it.

tru dat jt. seems like most folks have to actually wait tables for a while and then get promoted up. i always thought bartending was a seniority thing but what do i know, ive only been on 1 side of a bar.

Bartending school is a joke.

Your best move is to find a place looking for someone to cover weekend days and learn slowly that way. Restaurants are more willing to take on a rookie for those days.

Why would you pay someone to teach you when you can always find a place that will pay you to learn it

I'll use my GI benefits on dealer school before I would ever look at bartending school. People who fail out of school know how to open a Miller Lite bottle, pull a tap and count tips

Most bars I go to, all you have to know is how to twist the cap off the beer bottle or tilt the glass when pouring from the tap.:toast:
