Last year before I retired, I gave serious consideration to joining the Peace Corps. I do sort of regret it, and after talking with a very influential sports figure in my community the other day want to do something to give back.
I tried the teaching route, but all the extraneous stresses were my downfall. I loved my kids and still do, but the BS surrounding it held me back from achieving what I wanted to be.
Obviously, I am not a corporate guy and like to have control over my own schedule. However, nothing gets to me like children that have not been given a fair shake.
Looking for ideas or inspirations from others.

It is always great to give back...took me many years to start, but well worth the wait..too many people in this world do not get a break in life...I'm just happy to be involved and in good financial shape to do the things that are important to me, especially helping children and seniors...

What you do is phenomenal Viejo and is an inspiration to both myself and others. What I'm looking for is a more active role. I don't simply want to throw money at problems, I want to be there to make a difference.

Always have thought about trying to find a ten hour a week or so volunteer gig of some sort, but too busy getting plastered and posting until 3 in the morning to ever do it.

Top ten post of the year so far. A guy should really watch that thing once a week to put things in perspective.

For some reason that shows up as blank, but it is the video for Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror". Thoughts about Michael Jackson aside, that video is certainly amazing and should provoke emotions in anyone who has any kind of heart.

I certainly need to do a better part of helping in the community. Like I said, I had a long discussion with someone earlier and they definitely got my wheels turning.

I also thought to myself, what is the Answer ? What's the answer to stop world hunger ? How could We the people of the world, that have a slight upper hand in life.
But it Pisses me off when I think of All the Money that we donate 100's of Millions of Dollars, and All this is STILL out there.
Like it hasn't done a Fuking Thing !

Ok, now that I have blew off some steam.

I was just talking to the wife a few weeks ago about maybe being a Big Brother. Started to look into it.
I'm hoping to help at least one kid, and maybe give him something that he might not get. Because his life is so twisted.

And since the only Kid I have, is somewhere out there ( Long Story )
Don't even know his or her name.
I figure I do something for someone else. Someone that needs some kind of help. Be it a Big Brother or Father Figure of some kind.

Just my 2cents

Nice post Betall, when I taught I was basically a Big Brother to about 60 kids. Played basketball with them, took them to eat, etc.

Every single bit makes a difference.

Was a big brother in college for two years...very rewarding but was really too young and needed more guidance to make a bigger difference in the lives of kids without a parent..I was in Fairfield, Iowa at the time...

I was a teacher, don't want you to misinterpret what I was trying to say. Basically, I invested a lot into the kids I taught. Sometimes one on one is more effective though.

Yes I volunteer every spring /summer to coach Youth hockey.... we take kids to Tournaments all over the USA ... keeps them out of trouble and I love doing it, it is the most fun thing I do is heloing these kids .... our teams do not do half bad either , we have some great players.

DOBEY.... if you joined the peace corps, you would not be able to drink and get drunk that much man, you would have no mika tan also and would have to get up early everyday ..... best of luck with that .....

P.S. isn't most Peace corps volunteer's usually really Young like in the early 20's:drink:

I volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. You should check it out. There is not a lot of work and you get to give a child with a life threatening illness a chance to do or get something he/she really wants. Check it out...www.wish.org.

GD...Coaching is a great way to get involved with kids. As much as you love sports it's a natural. Just no taking side bets on the games.:lolBIG:
