How long did it take you to learn? What resources did you use? Any specific methods?

I've got basic strategy mastered. I've read it takes an awfully long time to get good at counting. I am semi-interested in learning but curious on other's dealings with it.

The counting itself can be learned pretty quickly. The hard part is doing it in a casino and not being obvious about it.

I think the best way to learn is simply taking a deck of cards and being turning cards over 1 at a time and keep count while you go through the deck. You should be able to go through the enitre deck in under 30 seconds fairly quickly. There is also some card counting tutorial out there. Just do a google search. But like I said doing it at home is alot easier than doing it in the casino.

It's really the bet variations that make you stick out.

i expect a lot of these threads with the release of this crappy movie "21" that is fixing to be released.

goooo... i am going to restrain myself.

Don't waste your time. Casino countermeasures make it useless. You will do just as well playing strict basic strategy with good money management.

Doing it right and getting away with it come with very long odds against the person of even above average intellect being able to become successfull at counting cards in this day and age..

25 years ago was a different story but today the casinos are just to aware and there is to much surveillance. Very few individuals have the brains, nerve and the patience required to succeed at card counting.

I used to dabble with single and double deck games back in the late 70s and early 80s in places like Binion's and The Castaways and can say first hand it works but those conditions are no longer available today.

I used a simple plus/minus and count aces and fives system.

The best souce of literature on the subject can be found online at The Gamblers Bookstore located in Las Vegas. You can order anything by UPS or Fed Ex online. Check the section marked blackjack, there are dozens of books including Ken Uston on Blackjack and Busting Vegas by Ben Mezrich.

All things considered it is a very difficult way to make an easy living and not recommended for the feint of heart.

This thread was not created because of that movie. My interest in counting is strictly to try to increase my chances of walking away a winner, not bringing down the casino. What were you going to say?

If I learned how to count I cant imagine MGM-Mirage worried about a $25-$75 a hand player like me? or am I wrong?

That is how I play it. I'm not rich nor am I trying to bankrupt the casino. I'll sit at the $10 table and bet anywhere from $10 to maybe on a very rare occasion $50 or $60. I basically play just to try and pay for my trip. Last time I went to Vegas I won about $800 in 4 days. And betting that small I never had a problem with the casinos. Now if your betting $1000 a hand I'm sure they will pay far more attention to you. I don't pay very often anymore but usually I play on the gambling boats down here in Florida. They seem to be even more lax.

shdw02 likes to semi-count his cards.....

he sits at a 1-2 deck game and if the first few hands are number-heavy he increases his bets.

It really is funny to watch....dealers watch so when he bumps up the bets pretty big, instead of dealing, the dealer just starts to shuffle (funny)...and the best part is now shdw02 has to go back to the low betting amount and he tries to be sly about it....

....really funny to watch player+dealer both fully aware of the other yet both trying to be sly about their actions.

I thought the keeping the count was the easy part, it was the fucking swings that I hated. Eventually I was realizing that I was making more money in the poker room so I just said f it and gave up the counting cards

You ned a nice bankroll and a huge amount of time to get past the swings.

Gotta stay sober too.

More like a job than gambling to do it right:toast:
