OT Cable Company/Pirating

Surprisingly, I wokeup this morning and went to check my internet and I loaded the webpage, there was a message from COX cable saying that i had illegally downloaded some files of The Wire (critically acclaimed TV show) and that I had to delete the episodes then call..I called, got it fixed but still, how do they know I'm downloading The Wire? How do they know whats on my computer? I was very surprised by this since i've been pirating for years and nothing like it has happened....

Anybody have similar experiences? Any info/insight is appreciated....

Pats, they have access to EVERY bit (that's not encyrpted) that gets transferred...

I got one one of these from Comcast.
I downloaded an episode of Law and Order,It said I violated their "User Agreement".Seems if you download something that they sell on their digital cable,it's a violation.
Never a problem with movies though,,as they aren't for sale as yet on their cable system until several months later.
I guess they really want that .99 cents.

Anyway ..nothing ever came of it

It's not the government, its a private business. You are using their service and they've decided they have the right to watch you using their "bits." I guess if they (the cable company) think you are taking money away from them by downloading these programs so they are going to try and scare you.....
