From the las vegas advisor:

Q:

The Lady Luck Hotel Casino downtown has been closed for over two years; please give an update on the status of the property.
A:

Here we go again, covering the Lady Luck.

QoD has never, in all its fabled history, received more questions about a single property than this downtown hotel-casino -- which isn’t even open for business. Does everyone really miss the joint so desperately? Or is it another instance of, in Joni Mitchell’s immortal lyrics, "Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got till it’s gone"? Or is the same reader sending the question from 50 different email addresses, every week?
Actually, we mourn the LL ourselves, to a certain extent. It was, without a doubt, one of Las Vegas’ great bargain and freebie casinos. We ate more prime rib specials, foot-long hot dogs, and cups of ice cream there than we care to recount. We made lots of free three-minute long-distance phone calls. We took a few turns in the Whirlwind of Cash. We enjoyed comp dinners in the Burgundy Room. We saw lots of performances in the showroom. We even stayed there on occasion when the rooms were so cheap we had to try it. And then there were a couple of cocktail waitresses…
Anyway, the Lady Luck surfaced recently in conjunction with, of all things, the proposed mob museum. The City of Las Vegas is trying to make a deal with CIM Group, the Hollywood-based owners of the Lady Luck and some surrounding property, to invest in one of Mayor Goodman’s pet projects, which will be housed in the old post office building on Stewart Street at Third Avenue, just around the corner from the LL.
The city has raised $15 million of the estimated $39 million the museum will cost to open and operate, and wants CIM to front up additional cash, that will be repaid at a future date in some way, such as a tax abatement, or special consideration for five acres of city-owned park land between the post office and the casino.
Here’s the crux of the matter for our purposes: The idea is to coordinate the debut of the mob museum with the reopening of Lady Luck. According to the stories we’ve seen, this probably won’t happen until at least 2009, and may spill over into 2010. Pundits predict that an agreement on the mob museum and repayment terms could take several months to negotiate, so we’re not holding our breath for further announcements. But rest assured that as soon as there are any new developments, we’ll be back on the Lady Luck beat.

I remember staying at Lady Luck back in the 80's. I didn't like the setup because you had to take 2 elevators to get to your room; one up to the mezzanine level and then another up to the rooms.

The casino was small and they had really cheap buffets and really tight slot machines. I used to just sleep there and maybe grab the breakfast buffet and then go over to Fremont St to do all my gambling.

When they renovate it I think they have to enlarge the casino and give people a reason to want to stay there; maybe put in a nice sports book or something.

All of downtown, except possibly the Golden Nugget, should be torn down.

You're very wrong. The Strip is for tourists; Downtown is for gamblers. I'll take a cramped, old-school Downtown casino over the megaresorts any day.

The bachelorette parties and the guys with hair gel and body spray can keep the Strip, because it's not for me.

True story..

Lady Luck had a live poker room back in late 70's; early 80's; and I lost with a str8 flush; only lost about $35.00 since it was like a 3-6 limit game with not a lotta money on the table.

Believe it or not, the same thing happened to me at the Golden Nugget poker room bay in the 80's. I had 7 8 spades and board came 9 10 J spades. Some lady at the table had Q K spades. We kept raising each other until I was all in. It was just a 3/6 limit so I didn't lose much either. But I'll never forget that hand as long as I live.

Back in those days they didn't have bad beat jackpots either. Sucks.

Vegas is Vegas cause of downtown.....screw the strip.

Nothing like some BJ at the sweaty spainard with an old lady pissing herself in the seat next to you.

Love every downtown casino and would take that over any one on the strip.

One of my favorite Vegas memories is of playing craps -- at an uncrowded table, mind you -- with not one, but two unrelated players using roll-along oxygen tanks. You don't get that on the Strip.

When I was living in Vegas I had a LL Gold Players card. With this card, you got everything free. Food, cigs, drinks, suites, the whole works. Believe me, when I was near broke, I used them in every way possible.

They had a free breakfast in the Burgandy Room every day for Gold card members. It was the best breakfast in town. Still miss is and the people who worked there.

I like The Cal & Mainstreet Station dowwntown.Good casinos & great places to eat.The rest of downtown is a little run-down,but I don't care.

It would be nice if there was another nice property downtown to cpmpete with The Nugget. The Vegas club kills me.The only sports themed
hotel/casino in Vegas & they close their sports book. They have a nice room built like a stadium & it has f**** slot machines in it!!!.Ashame as this place had potential. Now I zip right past it every time.

Lady Luck sign plucked off downtown tower
LAS VEGAS ***************
Posted: Oct. 27, 2011 | 4:34 p.m.
A sign from the now defunct Lady Luck hotel and casino was removed on Thursday to pave the way for the new Downtown Grand, the new name for the rebranded property. The Downtown Grand is planned to have a full casino and over 600 hotel rooms.

Vegas Lady Luck hotel becomes Downtown Grand

Downtown Grand isn't the first name bestowed on the property at Stewart Avenue and Third Street, but owners are hoping it sticks.

What was once Honest John's, Park Plaza and, most recently, the Lady Luck will henceforth be known as Downtown Grand. The renaming came at a Thursday ceremony where the public watched a crane lift the historic Lady Luck neon sign from one of the property's hotel towers.

"We're creating a metropolitan downtown pedestrian experience" said Seth Schorr, CEO of Fifth Street Gaming.

The rest of the signage will be removed in the coming days, owners said, as they embark on a massive renovation project to rebrand and reopen the hotel-casino.

Las Vegans have reasons to be skeptical. The Lady Luck, after all, closed in February 2006 for what was to be a one-year renovation. Instead, the property's future fell into limbo as the recession struck Las Vegas and stalled downtown's building boom.

In late 2010, a $100 million renovation was announced for the casino and two hotel towers

If the property does reopen in 2012, it would come back into play just as the city celebrates the opening of the nearby Mob Museum, new Las Vegas City Hall and Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

Visitors are pleased to hear about the future of the downtown area. "I'd rather be down here than on the strip. It's much more fun for older people"* said Valerie Floveck who is visiting from Denver. Her traveling companion Gregg Squire agreed. "We enjoy staying down here."

Locals who work near the soon to be Downtown Grand are also excited about their prospects for more tourist traffic. "It's a great day for us and a great day for downtown" said* Mark O'Brian a bartender at Triple George Grill.

Fifth Street Gaming, which is overseeing the redevelopment plan, did not have an opening date on the calendar, but said 2012 is a possibility.

That place is easily forgotten since it doesn't open to the FSE.

Hope this is a good sign that the economy is getting better in Las Vegas. Wonder when they will open up the hotels at Binions?
