Boy Scouts..

I was a Boy Scout for a long time and then went into a group known back then as The Explorers in high school. I enjoyed scouting and did very well, obtaining somewhere around 35 merit badges, was a member of the Order of The Arrow from the Moheagan Council for brotherhood and camping knowledge among scouts, obtained the rank of Eagle scout and received an award for Catholic Boy Scouts called The Ad Alteri Dei Medal (roughly translated God above self) awarded by a bishop..

I remember going to a place in Bolton Mass every summer called Camp Resolute. I was a longtime member of Boy Scout Troop 2. Sacred Heart Parish.

I remember all the ranks - Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, First Class, then the ranks that required merit badges to obtain - Star Scout, Life Scout and finally the highest rank which was Eagle Scout.

If I remember right you needed over 20 (at least) mandatory merit badges to make Eagle Scout. They included Lifesaving, Swimming, Camping, Citizenship in the home, community and nation badges, home repairs, American Heritage, Auto Mechanics, Forestry, Fishing, Hunting, First Aid, Cycling, Pioreering and a bunch more.

All in there were over 50 available merit badges if memory serves me. Some were madatory to make Eagle while others like sculpture and Water Skiiing for example were not.

We went to what were called camporee's twice a year also. You camped out with the entire troop for three days and two nights and had to leave the woodland camp area just like you found it when you left.

Scouting in those days was great for a kid as I am sure it still is...Scouting instilled a sense of character and community service in kids that was not easy to find elsewhere.

Yes, I was an alter boy also (no I was never molested). All this, scouting, Alter Boy, Explorers was the result of attending 12 years of parochial school growing up. 8 years at Sacred Heart Grammar School and 4 years at St. Mary's High School. Both closed now for many years. Those school were where I learned the little Latin I still remember.

Call it what you want, but by the time I was in the service I was glad I had been a Boy Scout for 6 or 7 years.

wil.

PS. I just looked it up - my old Troop - Troop 2 is still operating and even has a website.

I, WVU, promise to do my best to do my duty, for God and my country, to help other people and to obey the law of the pack.

memorizing this got me my first and only badge, but it helped me to be the good person that I am today.

I couldn't be a patrol boy because I lived to far from the school and had to catch two buses a day to get back and forth from home.

When I lived in WV I had a 2 bus, 2 hour trip each way so that I didn't have to go to a "hick" school.

i was in the cub scouts until 2 minor incidents occured.

one time at our den mothers house , we made these molds of washington and lincoln's heads. after they cooled off from being in the oven , me and another scout walked out onto her balcony where we noticed a pond about 40 yards away.

we decided to see if we could throw our molds all the way to the pond.

as they were in the air and we were cheering them on , the lady came walking out screaming at us. she was really mean...

then me and my buddy tried to cheat at the soapbox derby.

after those 2 strikes , they decided we werent scout material.

what a loss.....

Holy shit. Nothing has changed in 50 years except the cost.

From the website that until today I never knew existed:

Summer Camp 2008!
 • Troop 2 will once again be taking part in Summer Camp this year at Camp Resolute!
 • Troop 2 will be staying at the Cherokee site again this year, just a stone's throw away from the center of camp and the dining hall.
 • The cost for camp this year is $320, but only $290 if your fee is paid by April 17th... after that date it will be the full $320.
 • Brothers receive a discounted rate of $230 each!
 • Signup begins Thursday, February 28th, 2008
 • Signups/Payments are due by Thursday, April 17th WITH your payments!
I think the cost back then when I went to Camp Resolute was around $20 for the week and we were hard pressed to raise that. Usually my fees were paid by the Sacred Heart Big Brother Men's Club that helped kids in scouting with stuff like that if you were poor.

Without getting into a sob story I grew up with no father and had a Big Brother for a long time who used to take me to Boston College football and hockey games as a kid. He also must have been who paid for my summer camp and a lot of other activities that were routine back then for the Big Brother Program at Sacred Heart to help with. Stuff like scout uniforms and camping equipment etc.

The guys name was Mike, Italian natrually, and he was a BC grad. I remember he took me around 1962 to a game when Boston College hosted then perennial rival Syracuse University and I was able to watch the late, great Ernie Davis score 3 touchdowns in a Syracuse romp. The Orangemen back then were coached by a grumpy but famous for his day old school coach named Ben Schwartzwalder.

I have never forgot my Big Brother Mike. I remember watching Holy Cross college play Boston University at old BU field in a snow storm one December.

I also remember BC playing big time college hockey and going to games against teams like Army, Colgate, RPI, St. Lawrence, plus natrually Harvard, BU and Northeastern to watch BC hockey.

My hat if off to you as I know for sure that The Jesuits were tougher than the nuns I had at St. Mary's during my four years of high school, also had nuns for 8 years of grammar school at Sacred Heart..

I am sure you received a good education during those twelve years at what we used to call "Catholic School". Parochial school ws a term you hardly ever heard in the 50s and early 60s.
