Would the Cubs have dared sign their new right fielder Fukudome if Harry Carey was still calling games for them?

Fading Fukudome disappears from lineup

CUBS IN BRIEF

<!-- Article Publish Date -->August 23, 2008

<!-- Article By Line -->BY GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com
<!-- Article's First Paragraph --><!-- BlogBurst ContentStart -->You couldn't blame Friday's loss to the Nationals on Kosuke Fukudome. Except for a five-pitch at-bat off the bench in the seventh, he didn't play.
And whether the struggling lefty hitter plays again today, against another Washington left-hander, is uncertain.
<!-- Fact box starts here -->
<!-- BlogBurst ContentStart -->Manager Lou Piniella said two weeks ago he might seek ''other options'' for right field if Fukudome didn't start hitting again, then backed off two days later.
But Friday morning, he left open the possibility that Fukudome could be left out of the Cubs' lineup in back-to-back games for the first time over an issue not related to health (calf soreness kept him out of two straight in June).
''We'll see [today],'' said Piniella, who clearly hasn't been pleased with Fukudome's dramatic offensive dropoff the past few weeks.
When Fukudome grounded to third in the pinch-hit at-bat Friday, it dropped his August batting average to .153 and his overall average to a season-low .264.

I am only embarrassed by the fact I didn't get home in time to bet the over yesterday. Why should Cub fans be embarrassed?

Have the Sox over today, so bring this home for me DJ Matt.

Really, so that's why they booed them yesterday. Pretty shocked they did that.

Unfortunately, many of the 'fans' who go on the Friday games are not fans. Just got tix from the boss, or are entertaining clients. Too bad, the knowledge of Wrigley Field fans is dropping fast.

Cubs fans are getting spoiled by good baseball, expect to see a win everytime they go and are not happy when they see bad baseball that they're not used to seeing. Funny thing is people used to criticize Cubs fans for being complacent and not caring when they see bad baseball and now they are criticized for overreacting to bad baseball.

cubs fans overreact to EVERYTHING. Strike one, ball one, any form of contact, etc. I was very disappointed when I was there. I figured a team with such a long (sad, inept) history with so many "diehard" fans would have a slightly more intelligent fan base. Then I realized that they're the cubs for a reason and felt like an idiot for having any sort of expectations.

It's awfully ballsy of you to claim that cubs fans "expect to see a win everytime." I'm assuming the playoffs don't count?

They do count. Cubs fans will expect the Cubs to win in the playoffs and will boo if they don't.

If the Cubs fans overreatc to everything, then at least that says they are paying attention to the game, right? I thought the criticism was that they were just there to get a tan and not to watch the game. Actually have noticed that Cubs fans do a good job of noticing the little things and cheering moving runners along, sac flies, tagging up. Shit like that. Cubs fans are very intuned to the game. Wasn't always that way though. Things have changed.

I have been going to games since 1969 and you right on many points. Many of the people who go now are people who want to be seen. Pretty bad when your own team scalps their own tickets to avoid paying the other team their cut.

The attitude really changed when Dusty Baker came to town. His problem is he had more excuses than the Cub fans. Add in the fact that the White Sox won just a few years ago, and the people are getting hosed on tickets, well you get a different climate and not necessarily a better one.

At least they go to the games. White Sox will average about 33,000/game this year, and that is sad for a team with few expectations going into '08.

Post of the YEAR.

Every game there sounds like Busch on the day they bring in the bus loads of kids. Screaming when the ball is grounded to short does not make your fans great, sorry.

Sad also to look back at the sammy era. A whole decade of a fraud. How many real baseball fans want to be seen in one?

Dusty was a tool and Don Baylor was an even bigger one. Cubs haven't had a real manager since Don Zimmer until Sweet Lou. Lou Piniella, however, is a winner.

haha--not quite.
After last year's playoffs, how any of you tools can think he's a good manager is beyond me.
