My vote goes to Peavy. Nasty stuff, has movement and velo and keeps the ball down consistently and walks no one. If he played for a team that could hit he would have won 20-24 games easy.

Can't say much disagreeing about Johan, but after last year I would beg to differ that there is no debate. In my opinion to say that the best pitcher in baseball, "no debate" as you said, went 15-13 the previous year is laughable. I can not remember watching Peavy throw and not look nails on the mound. He flat out dominates damn near every time he gets the rock. Johan relies on his change-up, which is one of the best in the game, but last year was not nearly the same pitch. It will be interesting to see if last year was a fluke or if hitters are beginning to figure him out. Peavy has tremendous movement given his velocity. He keeps the ball down so he keeps the ball in the bark (unlike Santana). Peavy will get his 2nd Cy Young this year.

interesting we we a couple of Peavy votes..The Padres are my team and Peavy my favorite player..I've probably watched 90% to 100% of Peavy's career starts and know his game very well..While Peavy is dominating, has nasty stuff, movement, fire and love of the game, I still think he needs another Cy Young to be called the best pitcher in baseball.. Santana is still my vote until someone takes it from him, but Peavy is knocking on the door

There are probably 5-6 guys who have solid arguments to be called the best there is. Peavy is still young and has more to prove to be the consensus best in the game. My opinion is that he already is.

a lot of different ways to come at this.

peavy probably has the best stuff.
santana is probably the best pitcher.

and then when you talk about who you want on the mound if you had to win ONE game, and i think thats pretty cut and dry:

josh beckett.
who is the best big game pitcher of this new generation.

baseball is ultra subjective though.

prodigy,

Great call on Josh Beckett. If you want to watch a masterpiece, find his game 6 performance in the World Series against the Yankees. His stuff was so incredible, I don't think I will ever see a better pitching perfomance.

very much agree. hate to get caught up in hyperbole. but that performance against the yanks was one of the best ive seen as well.

whereas santana and peavy are dominant because they can mix up a lot of pitches, beckett is the only one in this conversation that can basically tell the hitter what is coming (fastball) and still dominate. its not even remotely a knock on peavy or santana. but beckett just comes right at hitters and is borderline arrogant in the process because he just knows he can overpower you. and when he does decide to mix in a curveball, its game over if he has control of it.

Wasn't Santana hurt last year? I'll take the younger peavy.

I don't think there's any doubt Beckett is the best big game pitcher going now. Peavy and Santana have been roughed up in the playoffs

I'll take Peavy. While San Diego is a huge pitchers park he actually has a better road record. The guy is still young and learning, much more upside imo.

Verlander, Webb, and Sabathia are right there too..

Gun to my head I take Peavy ahead of anyone right now though.

sabathia isnt even in the top 10.
honestly.
way too fragile mentally. someone is going to grossly overpay for him next year. verlander is much better imo. i like him a lot.

Problem with Peavy is he's a 7-inning pitcher. I'll take Beckett just because of the park he pitches in. Rather have Bedard over Peavy too.

After some thought i came up with the top five (in my humble opinion). All five are great, this is just how i see it.

1) Peavy
2) Beckett
3) Sabathia
4) Santana
5) Webb

Is he a 7 inning pitcher because of his coach? Most pitchers today are 7 inning pitchers. San Diego's stadium is also a pitcher friendly park.

To me, an ace helps you rest your bullpen, not extend it. His longest outing last year was 7.1 innings, once. Pitching in that big park should help him pitch longer. I'm sure the manager has something to do with it.
