freshman forward Taylor King has decided to transfer...former Mickey D's All-America from California.....just another big man who wants to shoot 3 pointers

and listen to this quote...

"....feels he'd fit in better at another school," Calloway said. (HS coach) "He mentioned UCLA, Souther Cal and North Carolina as possible schools he'd feel comfortable at."

Not that it would happen, but hilarious.

The list of McDonalds AA's that have transfered from Duke recently...

2008: Taylor King - ???
2007: Jamal Boykin - California
2006: Eric Boateng - Arizona State
2004: Michael Thompson - Northwestern
2003: Kris Humphries - Minnesota
2000: Chris Burgess - Utah

Mike Chappell also transfered to Michigan State in 98 or so. I may be forgetting others also.

and other players that left Duke early on not so good terms...

Avery
Brand
Magette
McRoberts
Shavlik Randolph

Remember McRoberts and Shav left "early for the pros" even though they knew they had no shot at being drafted in the first round? Randolph didn't even get drafted. Coach K has a terrible track record of developing kids for the NBA, its almost sad how many careers went down the drain at Duke.

the bottom line...

Coach K can't recruit anymore. He brings in kids who are unathletic and just want to shoot 3 pointers. He can't score a big man to save his life. They've lost their mystique. They went out in the first round last year and almost lost to Belmont this year. Everyone realizes the Cameron Crazies are just gay. Hard times to be a dookie.

He can recruit. Seems to recruit the same types though. Really needs a kick-ass point guard and a low-post presence.

Hard to find a player of recent vintage who has improved dramatically during their stay at Duke however.

Here's the real Duke basketball trend:

Since their title in '01

Tourney record against teams 6 or more seeds worse than themselves: 12-0
Record against teams within 5 seeds of themselves: 1-7

That lone victory came as a 1 against a 5 in their cake run to the final four in 2004 (beat 16, 8,5,7)

The thing about most of those mcdonalds all americans you listed is is that they aren't really great hs player deserving of AA recognition. They got picked on the team cuz they committed to Duke in most cases. Taylor King was ranked in the 50s-60s when the McDonalds AA team came out he finished the year ranked 39th on Rivals.

Boykin was a burger boy? wtf, he was ranked 108 by Rivals... a 3 star. Thompson was ranked 30th by RSCI. Boetang ranked 82nd by Rivals.

Duke has a 5 star guard coming next year and does have an early committ for 2009 in 6'10 4 star Plumlee, a guy originally from Indiana.

King should step down a level where he can really shine.
I know LMU would welcome him with open arms as would any WCC team.

These guys left early to get drafted in the 1st round of a team that 1 37 games.

The problem with Coach K is that he wants players that are going to stay 4 years and are similiar to Shane Battier and Grant Hill.

There are very few players like that, DJ Augustin comes to mind, but I think he bolts in the next 2 weeks. Also, Coach K tends to be a bit to arrogant for his own good. I know he pretends to come across like he is Joe Pa or Bobby B, but just watch the post game interview after Uconn loss in the Final Four, what an ass!

Please don't say he just lost, that is the true mark of a leader, being able to handle adversity. Bowden is always upbeat even when he loses.

Avery, Brand, and Maggette were the first players to ever leave Duke early, because they saw right through the whole arrogance and loser school that is Dook. They were tricked into going to Duke, just like all of these guys that have transfered. Difference is they were good enough to bolt for the pros rather than have to transfer. There have also been rumors of Lance Thomas transferring.

Coach K has a history of "over recruiting"....meaning signing a 4 star power forward one year and promising them the PT/starting spot and then the next year signing another 4 or 5 star power forward slated to take his spot.

Bottom line is K is bringing in a bunch of pussy forwards like Josh McRoberts year after year now. He's lost it.

He's one of the most overrated coaches out there. Missouri fell for the Duke mystique when they turned down Calipari and Bill Self and hired Quin Synder instead because he was the "young, sexy, recruiter, with the great Duke pedigree." Synder managed to take a perennial top 30 program and run it completely into the ground skirting the rules at every possible chance, multiple allegations of marrital infidelity, and there were serious questions as to whether or not the guy was on blow for the majority of his tenure at Mizzou. On many occasions his teams looked lost and people weren't sure if Missouri was running any kind of offense at all. When you have superior talent the talent can sometimes make up for the poor coaching but when you have inferior talent is the coaching able to make up for the lack of talent. In Duke's and Missouri's case the answer is no.

i bet if you look at their overall record the last five years there are not more than five with better records. Top 10 ever year. Oh how any other school would kill for that success.

Nobody is saying that Duke hasn't been great. However, Coach K is not John Wooden.

The way they treated William Avery would keep me away from Duke alone. They told Avery to not hold his presser on Campus because Coach K thought he was making a mistake by leaving early.

WTF?

I agree that something has wobbled the wheels of their wagontrip to the final four. I don't think the wagon is mired quite as deep as the Sooner Scooner in the '84 Orange Bowl, but the Cameron mexican jump beans in blue face have some problems. The first major problem is that the nation's largest athletic cash register (Carolina is currently ranked one) resides sixteen miles away. Duke is no slouch and has ranked in top ten a few times in Director's Cup (formerly Sears Cup) overall sports standings which is no small feat given the competition and is a testament to their deep pockets North East big city alum base. Specific to hoops, the old Knight/Krzyzewski coaching recruiting axis has lost influence for obvious reasons in addition to K's desciples flaming out as annoited coaches. The Avery/Brand/Magette problems where something I still don't understand (obviously a great team) but I think it inflicted lasting hurt on Duke in the tight recruiting circles. Fair or not, the Duke Lacrosse situation resonated some racial vibrations that other white private powerhouses like Georgetown have not yet endured. I hope not, but race might be the unspoken elephant in this recruiting room. Who knows. But even the loyal blues recognize the situation:

"The panic over the recent recruiting news is symptomatic of something I’ve seen growing among the Duke fan base over the last couple of years - an unexplainable (to me) sense of pessimism and negativity about the program. Whether it’s complaints about K’s recruiting, the team’s lack of size, his supposed refusal to develop his bench, his reluctance to play a zone or his fondness for the delay game, there’s the kind of constant carping that would be more fitting for a program that’s floundered for the last quarter century and not one that’s flourished."
