Internet Access.. wi-fi hotspot or at home.
a wi-fi hot spot would be like Panera, starbucks.. your computer finds the location automatically when it searches you need to do nothing.

if at home/work.. internet access with a router (there are wireless routers.. plug the router into the modem)

internet.. 1, 2, well 1 2

buy wireless router...make sure it is 802.11b or 802.11g....i believe if you get the g, it is backwards compatible with the 802.11b so you will be fine.

FYI g is "better" than b

router will come with instructions but basically as matt said, plug modem into router....(will have to plug a computer into the router as well to set up security)....next, if you secure, will need to configure on your laptop wireless card (will detect and all you need to do is put in pword)

if this is the case you have 2 options:

option 1: get an aircard....one of those cards where your cell phone provider has an attachment (used to be PCMCIA, now-a-days i'm sure they have usb) that will allow you to use internet independently. This will require you to have the actual attachment device and service from your phone provider ($$)

option 2: find wireless networks....always search....you will find free ones (usually unsecured personal or businesses looking to attract people to the area)....and you will find ones you have to pay (there is usually a per day fee which is less than $10....very reasonable for vacation money)

laptop has this thing built in to get you wireless internet.. if your at work.. more than likely you can get internet access at work for free with laptop

if you are traveling and dont have time to look for a panera bread.. starbucks.. etc. thats where you get this card and you pay a service to a company like ATT

if your at home.. your looking at 25 - 50 bucks a month.. and it can be 30 - 150 for a wireless router

Most wireless laptops can still be plugged in using cable so you will be OK if your work requires or provides internet access.

At home you just need a wireless router, as others have mentioned, to plug into your modem which will allow you to use your laptop anywhere around the house. Should be less than $50.

On the road you will find most hotels offer free wireless access (except Las Vegas where they'd rather have you spend time in the casino than on the internet).

More places are starting to offer free wireless access as an inducement to patronize their business, e.g. coffeeshops.
