I heard a guy on the radio the other day using this, it was for football but I believe it can be said for all professional sports.

Order of importance to have a winning team

A. Owner
B. GM
C. Manager/coach
D. X (football would be QB, baseball maybe Starting Pitching, basketball maybe PG and Hockey I guess could be Goalie, no idea really about hockey)

I think this is 100 percent true, lets look at my 2 favorite teams that seem to be going in opposite directions of each other

Cincinnati Bengals

Owner- F
GM- no gm because the owner sucks so F by default
Coach- B- (i'm being generous here I think, but nobody can win in this situation)
QB- A One of few bright spots

Add all that up and you see why the bengals suck and won't be getting any better anytime soon

Cincinnati Reds

Owner- A (wants to win, spends money, brings in the baseball people to do this
GM- B+ (Has done more good than bad and add in Jockety as an advisor and the front office is solid)
Manager- B (its too early really, but i'm givng dusty a solid B, players love him and trust me, after seeing minor league coach after minor league coach around here in cincinnati, its nice to have a proven guy)
SP- B (too eary, but wow does it look good so far, if we could get the offense on the same page the reds could be contenders as early as this year)

thats my thoughts, agree or disagree with this?

Owner is more important in baseball than the other sports thanks to the salary cap.

You will adjust your Dusty Baker ranking down after a couple of years. Players will run that clubhouse into the ground.

i actually think being an NBA GM is the most important out of all the sports. its the hardest league to trade in and with a salary cap you have to project down the road.

dolphins owner is one of the best in all of sports, spends money, hires best coaches, signs free agents and they were 1-15.

An F in 3 categories can certainly override an A in the 4th.

A testament to the theory in the original post, Al Davis, the Bidwells, Donald Sterling, Robert Kraft.

This debate could go full circle... It's easy for anyone to make a bad decision.. totally agree with FW about Baker.. But I'm also optimistic about the Reds in the near future, not so much long term.

Dolphins can really only move forward. Huziengar or whatever the guy's name has had enough problems with blockbuster and has his hands in just about everything. Theres more to be said about him and problems but thats just trash talk =0)

The players on the field are always most important. Obviously management is the one responsible for putting players on the field, so the whole thing seems like an exercise in circular logic. But I would say there are more examples of great players overcoming poor management, than the other way around. Why did the Yankees in the 90s after struggling for over a decade?

(and in baseball, the lineup is definitely far more important that the starting pitching)

Steinbrenner in the 80s was an entirely different owner than in the 90s.
