I was too young to see Pete play, except for a few games with the
Celtics at the end of his career.

Sadly, his NBA career was diminished by his knee injuries.

But no one ever will come even close to what he did in college.

He will always be by far the greatest college basketball player
ever.

He AVERAGED 44+ pts a game before the 3 pt line, and before the
shot clock.

They went back and tracked his shots, and calculated that with a
3 pt line, he would have averaged 57+ pts a game. I'd say that
if there was a shot clock, he would have averaged well over 60
pts a game. That is just plain sick.

Bill Walton quotes the guys who tracked his shots and calculated
the extra 13 points here:

I used to play a lot of golf with one of Pistol's roomates at LSU, and some of the stories he told were unbelievable. He was mentioned in the book("Pistol") numerous times. Very sad.

I would add Larry Bird here. I was 10 years old staying up late watching him play his games against old Missouri Valley foes as New Mexico St., West Texas St. One of the best games in conference that year was when they played at Southern Illionois and won 69-68. The tournament games in 1979 against Arkansas (Sidney Moncrief) and Depaul before they played Michigan St. in the championship were classics. Bird was one of the best IMO

Pistol Pete is the ONLY autograph that I ever got. Thought I had lost it only to find it a couple of years ago. A great and gracious player. RIP, Pete. LT

Pistol played in the golden era of scoring guards in NCAA:

Austin Carr
Rick Mount
Calvin Murphy

My fav college player in 76-78 was Butch Lee of Marquette. Just great at getting hoops at winning time when all eyes on him. Believ, if memory serves me right, that he played for Puerto Rico in 76 Oly's and lead his team to a 1 pt losss against USA.

78 was awesome when he was a senior with McGuire calling the games and the final minutes were BLT...Butch Lee Time.

I'm still sitting here totally amazed that this guy averaged 44 pts per
game for his whole college career, before the 3 pt line.

That is simply a mind-blowing stat.

Birdman, I watched Butch Lee and Marquette win the Midwest regional(1977) in Oklahoma City. They came back from way down to edge Kansas State, and then blew out Wake Forest. The next week(UNC Charlotte and North carolina) they won it all.

i'm currently reading pistol: the life of pete maravich. very good book so far and i highly recommend it.

I'm currently reading:

"Maravich" by Federman and Terrelrman

http://www.amazon.com/Maravich-Wayn...bs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1208134565&sr=8-3

In here they say that Pete would routinely shoot and hit shots from 25-40 feet. That it was very common for him to take two steps in from
half court and launch a bomb, and hit it - like it was just another
shot in his repertoire.

there really isnt a bad maravich book out there. all of them offer a different perspective of his life. sad to say, he wasnt without his own demons. normally, you would feel compelled to call 'bullshit' on some of his exploits, but there are many people that have attested to him practicing trick shots and all sorts of long range shots until he perfected them.
