Herschel Walker Speaks Out

by Molly McCall 3 hours ago Tue, 15 Apr 2008 12:31:36 PDT
Over the course of a glittering athletic career, running back Herschel Walker shattered records, racked up yards, and generally left everyone behind him in the Astroturf. Now, he's broken another kind of precedent. In a new book and in interviews, he's revealed that he suffers from the mental illness dissociative identity disorder or "DID." Since renamed, the disease was once called multiple personality disorder.
Yesterday, on "Good Morning America" and "Nightline," the legendary footballer talked of how he doesn't remember winning the Heisman Trophy in 1982 and when he eventually came to realize that he has at least a dozen alter egos. "Breaking Free," a memoir recounting his struggles with the disease, will publish later this week.
News of the Hall of Famer's condition has swept the Web. Searches for his name logged a massive gain yesterday, registering today as a breakout mover and maintaining a steady grip on the top hourly searches module in Buzz. By the end of the athlete's media tour on Monday, interest in "dissociative identity disorder" and "multiple personality disorder" had more than doubled.
In Buzz, a slew of popular articles have covered Walker's revelations. A Yahoo! Sports story describing his condition has attracted the most votes. Reports have also detailed the athlete's different personalities, but a post from PhillyBurbs.com connects Walker's disease to head trauma in football. "A skeptic has to ask," the Philadelphia blogger writes, "How much of this is actually a lifelong disorder or a result of years of football?"
As for the commonly held perception that DID is "bogus," the ex-Cowboy responds: "That's the reason America is beautiful. Everyone's entitled to their opinion." Walker also says that "he hopes to educate the public and break down stereotypes about this disorder." Judging by Buzz, he's well on his way.

Typical of his species.

When they don't have money, they have problems.

When they have money the problems they have are still there.. must be racism.

Guess I'm the only one that isn't skeptical of him

Dude is one of the straightest shooters I've ever met.

Had about a half dozen conversations with him while I was a little league umpire in Irving TX during 1992-4 and he had a nephew that was on one of the teams.

Same league I called behind the plate a couple of times when 10 year old Prince Fielder was a pitcher.

Dude was like 5'5" and a solid 150 lbs. The average size in league was of course about 4'8" and 90 lbs

I'd guess his fastball was as good as mine at the time and I had mine tested in that radar gun gimmick at the Ballpark in Arlington where I busted 38mph several times...heh

Blew the little guys away. Then when he batted, it was all smashes to the outfield, though I don't recall any over the fence homers - even in that smaller scale stadium.

you have to put jim brown, and bo jackson on that list to.i have to give walker the benefit of the doubt, and maybe reading his book can turn someone life around.my dads cousin has battled mental illnes, and his depressin has gotten the best of him to the point the only thing that helps him is shock theropy.my dad ask his sisters about him,and their to ashame to say.you guys who critisize walkers motives, should just give him a break.just imagine what this does to his family.
