I knew he's had an amazing offensive career, but this stat really impressed me:

With a career average of .302, Thomas is one of four players in baseball history to record at least a .300 average, 500 home runs, 1,500 RBIs, 1,000 runs and 1,500 walks. The others are Mel Ott, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams.

That just blows me away. Unfortunately it was part of an article about him being benched for hitting .167, but still.

He put up incredible numbers in the first few years of his career.........one of the greatest RIGHT-handed hitters of all-time and a certain HOF'er.

Manny Ramirez will join this club in 4 years when he attains his 1500th base on balls.........plus his average will be higher and he will have considerable more homers, rbi's, and runs scored.

Check out the comparison of the two currently.......keeping in mind that Manny is four years younger than Frank............

..................AVG......HR.......RBI.......RUNS......WALKS

FRANK.........303......516.....1685.....1474......1639
MANNY.........313......496.....1624.....1357......1133

Man, that is amazing. I didn't realize that either. Like Fishhead says, a right-handed hitter. I think Mel Ott was a lefty. To be in that company,
Ott, Ruth, Williams is just incredible. And for what it's worth he always said he never took 'roids (I actually believe him) and had the sack to critisize guys who used during the Steroid Era. I wonder if the Blue-jays are really trying to screw him like he claims. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me, but I hope this ends well for Frank. Another impressive thing about him is that he didn't strike out that much, especially earlier in his career. Which of course, is rare for a power hitter and anyone who can do that is so valuable to his team.

Yeah, but I think of Ramirez as an all time great. To see him on a list like that wouldn't surprise me as much.

I knew Thomas was great, but to be on a list with Ruth, Ott, and Williams really changed my perspective on him.

I guess the difference is Thomas peaked 15 years ago, while Ramirez might be peaking as I type this.

I got to see Thomas only once. It was in Tampa two years ago, and he hit a home run. I wish I'd seen more of both of these players, but sadly they're in the wrong league for me.

Your exactly right.......Frank Thomas is very underrated as an offensive player.

If you remember, after the first 5-7 years of his career he was hailed as possibly the greatest of the great...........then a few off years(although still good), and a lot of people have forgotten how great he was and how great his overall career has been.

As I am typing another reply in this thread, SportsCenter just reported that Toronto has released Thomas. Unreal!

Bonds barely misses being on this list. His average is .298.

FWIW - joebatters.

Actually Mel Ott, Ted Williams and Babe Ruth were all left handed hitters.

BTW.. With 516 career homers, a .302 liftime BA and back-to-back MVPs, without a bit of suspiscion of juicing, Frank Thomas is a lock Hall of Famer.

wil.

He should have just STFU and be happy that he still had a job. It's all about the himself at this point in time and nothing about the team.

does not surprised me, they dont make sega games for loser players. I remember in the early to mid 90s when i was a kid, it was ken griffey jr. frank thomas, barry bonds than everyone else. I would have also ranked them in that order.

Obviously Toronto don't feel he is a $10 million ball player next year. Yankees and Red Sox can afford to gamble on a contract like that. Thats a huge difference and why baseball needs a hard salary cap.

Griffey was a better overall player than Thomas, but Frank was the best clean hitter of this generation.

I'd like to see the reds get him, they currently have ZERO right handed power off the bench, he could play first against lefties and be a big right handed bat off the bench

Really hard for a NL team to take him. He is a major liability in the field. AL teams I can see taking a shot would be Yankees, Seattle, Angels, maybe Minny.

now we'll see how much frank really wants to play baseball. he's obviously going to take a huge paycut if he plays somewhere else.

[h=1]Frank Thomas says he should be first-ballot Hall-of-Famer[/h]By Scot Gregor <!-- %Body% --><!-- %Body$x("^.+$", "$0

That includes all-time home run leader (762) Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa, who all fell far short of induction their first time on the ballot.
Throughout his career and now into retirement, Frank Thomas has been an outspoken critic of players suspected of using performance-enhancing drugs.
Bonds, Clemens and Sosa all fit the profile, and Thomas feels strongly they got what was coming.
“I wouldn’t say I feel bad for them,” Thomas said at SoxFest on Saturday. “I respected them on the field, but they chose this. They made their own decisions off the field and they’ve got to live with it.
“Anytime you look at the PED situation, you look at the Lance Armstrong situation, you look at stuff like that, it’s serious out there. Thank God I’m blessed I did it the right way. I had a good family base that made me outwork everybody else because that’s the only way I made it to the big leagues.”
Eligible for Hall of Fame induction for the first time next year, Thomas has the career numbers to make Cooperstown on the first try.
The greatest hitter in White Sox history retired following the 2008 season with a .301 batting average, 2,468 hits, 521 home runs and 1,704 RBI.
“I think I’ve done enough to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer,” Thomas said. “Watching all the nonsense unfold and not really knowing what was going on, it makes me much more proud of my career. I competed in that era. I played at a high level in that era. There are a lot of great players but as it unfolds, a lot of it was not the real deal. I know 100 percent I was the real deal.”
Morel on the mend?
Brent Morel hit 7 home runs in September of 2011 and was the White Sox’ opening-day starter at third base last year.
Morel played in only 35 games with the Sox before a back injury ended his season, but general manager Rick Hahn said he still has a shot at making the 25-man roster this year.
“I saw him the other day and he looked great,” Hahn said. “He’s still in the mix. There’s no reason for us to push him away.”
Newcomer Jeff Keppinger is expected to be the Sox’ regular third baseman, but he is versatile enough to play all over the infield. If Keppinger is moved elsewhere, Morel could possibly sneak his way back into the lineup.
“He hit 7 home runs (in September of ’11) and was driving the ball to all fields and we were saying he could be a long-term solution,” Hahn said. “We’ll have to see in (spring training) when he’s diving for balls and other things, but he’s back on track.”
