padres are crazy.
this washed up loser costs them the season last year, then they bring him back and he just screwed maddux on win 350.
if i were maddux, i'd have demanded to go for the CG SO.
esp w/ only 1 run lead, you know hoffman would give it up

:smoker2:It's not all Hoff's fault, if Bard didn't try to extend it to a double, it would have been game over.

You really got to wonder how a team, that should be expecting a lot of close games, doesnt make a move for a new closer.

old news. he should have been traded or released last year. a team that relies on pitching shouldn't have a gas can closing games.

You guys think Hoffman's a Hall of Famer? Despite being all-time saves leader, IMO, NO. Other than making it to the WS in 98 (and being swept by the Yanks), what other contributions has he made?

Obviously you guys along with me bet the Padres......however, these threads of closers ALL sucking when YOU bet them are tiresome....Im convinced every closer sucks.....You could start a thread about who is good, and the minute they blow a save, they will suck too....last year Todd Jones was supposedly the worst closer ever, but that lasted a day until Joe Borowski would blow one, then Mariano Riveria was garbage, and today its Trevor Hoffman.......Im sure Pappelbon will blow one in a few weeks when everyone has the Red Sox, and he will suck too.....it just happens guys.....move on to the next game.....they ALL blow saves.....its called gambling, you guys dont ever say thank you Troy Percival for going 1-2-3 in the 9th.....but when he gives up that jack, the new thread of Troy Percival sucks appears! Its just comical to me....I dont post much on here, because a lot of it is just you guys venting about your $20 you lost, but I still love the website for information.......in the meantime keep venting boys, who will suck tonight?

As far as the Hall of Fame goes, there's no way the all-time saves leader doesn't get inducted.

You can understand in a way why they stick with him. Again, all-time saves leader, he's spent his entire career with this small-market team and the Padres are simply reciprocating some of that loyalty. It would be kind of cold and humiliating to strip him of his job because of those blown saves, costly as they might have been, to end last season.

Having said that, baseball is a business, and they've got a pretty good closer-in-waiting in Heath Bell setting things up for Hoffy. If he continues to blow saves, and Bell continues doing what he's doing, a change will come. But Hoffman is gonna have a little longer leash than most.

Remember too, among all-time saves men, Hoffman has one of the lowest blown-save percentages. He's earned that little extra goodwill.
