North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough -- The Associated Press national player of the year last season -- will return for his senior year.

Sophomores Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington will declare for the NBA draft, the school says, but will not hire agents -- leaving open the possibility of their return.

Hansbrough, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 22.6 points and 10.2 rebounds. He led the Tar Heels to the winningest season in school history and the Final Four.

Seems like a dumb move. He's not really the type of guy who can improve his draft stock any by going back. One injury away from passing up millions for a very tiny gain in draft status, if any.

should have done the opposite for all three of them.

Ellington and Lawson are nowhere near NBA ready players. Maybe they go first round and turn into solid players down the line, but it's a risk IMO. Lawson is a poor man's Ray Felton...fast as hell, can't shoot, and hands like a rock though he is a decent dribbler. Ellington doesn't have crazy athleticism and is a bit awkward when he runs with the ball, will be a good NBA shooter though. He'll probably be better than Lawson down the road.

I'm sad now.

ok they aren't hiring agents...I'm about to rant some more though...

Lawson is projected low first round, Ellington in the SECOND round...what the fuck are they thinking?

Seems like a fairly deep guard class at this point (Rose, Mayo, Bayless, Gordon, Westbrook, Collison, Augustin, Chalmers, Abrams, Lester Hudson) and Ellington and Lawson in particular haven't fulfilled their potential yet and would benefit greatly from another year in school, one in which they would be huge favorites to win a national championship and get that much more exposure before leaving.

They have holes in their game, there's no debating it.

Maybe they'll come back still....seems like the smart thing to do. Along with JJ Hickson from NC State...he needs another year, too.

Lawson, will be a backup and play if the team has a PHX style offense. Ellington, WTF, wher is he going. They don't run 9 staggered screens for you to get a shot up.

Tyler staying what a shocker. Yeah right. He likes being the man. He know his draft stock is getting any higher or lower. And he knows his nba career will suck

does tyler's family have money?

They aren't hurting financially but not sure that they are loaded or anything either.

Tyler absolutely enjoys being in college, and will be in line to break UNC's all time scoring and rebounding records. If he wants to stay, get his degree, and be big man on a campus full of hot chicks, more power to him. He stock can only get slightly higher, however. He needs to show off some athleticism his senior year and play above the rim a bit more, blocking shots and getting higher on jump hooks.

Tyler -BMOC, does the amount of ass a player gets in NBA really drop off?

He knows he isn't anything better than a late 1st round pick. Does he want to sit their on draft day and just watch everyone else pass him, no he is going to wait until next year to see that happen.

All 3 should stay, they came so close to winning it all and money will be there next year. Never a doubt in my mind that TH would return, the other 2 would be better served to play 1 more year at unc. Ellington will be a stud in the nba.

they should stay not because of a championship and the money will be there. They should stay because next year there is a real drop of talent wise.

Also, how many guys are going to declare, seem like already 100.

Good posts above, especially Mike. Hansbrough is a solid baller and it is no surprise he might return. Agree with others that Lawson and Ellington should hang for another year but it is hard to know their financial situations. UNC is a media magnet (for instance, where are Kentucky or Indiana on the historic program TV schedule scale?) and I wonder if this year's team didn't suffer some internal divisions - Hansbrough post game quote on the VaTech prayer shot, "my team got me the ball". In some ways Carolina is a better version of the Yankees where the media kitchen is hot.
