NBA-Why don't losing teams foul in final minute?

Can't believe teams are not learning from this mistake. 90% of time they end up painting themselves into corner and leave themselves just a few seconds and still need a few 3-ptrs. Years ago they did it all the time and gave their team chance in final few seconds.

if youre down by 1 or 2, i can understand not fouling. even if you give up an offensive rebound or a foul, theres a reasonable chance you can get a split pair of free throws, trail by 3, and get the ball back at worst.

but seriously, what are the chances of getting a stop, getting the ball back, and then converting a 3 pt shot? a lot has to break right.

totally different if youre down 1 or 2.

if youre down 3, you need everything to align.

I'm not sure. It depends who you can foul. If you're fouling a guy almost certain to make both then I'm not sure you're better off. Down 5 you gotta hit a 3, hope they don't make both then hit another 3. Better off getting a stop and one shot to tie. Tends to work better in college where nobody can hit FT's and 3 pointers are like layups.

Very often it seems that the best route to take would be to send them to FT line and hope they miss a few. Too often this year have seen teams give game away by letting too much time run off and end up with not enough time to pull out victory. Stretch the game out, don't leave it all on the line in one posession.

I agree as I think there should me more fouls because when down, you want to lengthen the game.

Although I can see a few good reasons to wait (until less than 24 sec):

- NBA players generally are pretty good with FTs....they are pros
- The free throws are easy to make up 5.....whereas if you get a stop and a 3, now you foul (maybe with 10 sec only) and down only 2, these FTs have a lot more pressure.

Right on FT factor ... and even though they are pros they still miss frees. Incredibly there are teams in NBA that are like 70% with FT's. Sad but true. I'll say it again, NBA teams should be avg. about 90% from stripe, they have been doing this a hundred times a day since the 6th grade for foq sake!
