site administrators can set the time required as to what counts as a "viewer".

now im not 100% certain on this, but here we difine a viewer as someone who has viewed the site within the past 2 hours.

other sites stretch this to about 8 hours or so.

For the record

The abosolute busiest times have been between 12:55 and 1:00 PM EDT on NFL Sundays. That is the time frame when the last several online user records have been established.

For example the current record is still viewable above the online users box: Most users ever online was 6,362, 11-25-2007 at 1:00PM.

Remember VBulletin uses a admin changable clock to measure online users
(in other words all VBulletin sites can adjust the amount of hours it wants
viewers to see how many people are online for).

When you see a time frame that makes sense for most ever users online like post time on an NFL Sunday you know that site is only counting users actually viewing and participating in the site recently and not 8 or 12 hours earlier.

Look for a VBulletin site whose online user record is at an odd time of day and on an odd date like the middle of baseball season and you know that the numbers are fabricated by expanding your online user time frame.

Here at The Rx.com we only count users who have had some sort of actual activity on the site within the previous two hours.

Actual activity is defined as making a post, refreshing a forum, opening a thread, or anything that causes the screen you are looking at to update.

wil..

i think it has to do with what Wil has found here before...someone post some kind of picture and suddenly everyone on the planet that is looking at that picture is somehow tuned into you..we have seen this here in the RR..

as far as the 8 hour or 12 hour thingy, they could set theirs to 8 days or 12 days and it still would not come close to the numbers that show up..don't know why people have to be deceptive?

similar question............when you click on a thread in the Rx why does it not register right away. Usually it would take up to 10 minutes before giving you a tally whereas across the street their site would tally the second you click on a thread.

Thread Views register once per hour at 5 minutes to the top of the hour. Watch a popular thread at 7:54PM EST and mark the # of views and then check the same thread at 7:56PM EST for number of views. The difference is how many views the thread had in the last hour.

Nes - I am off but when I check my email I sometime make a post.

Wil..........why is it done this way. The feedback, when it's register right away, gives the forum a better indication on how popular a thread is at that point in time. It's a better tool for poster in a high profile day ie. Sunday noon for NFL

Like I said.........across the street has it updated after every view. When there is an important thread you can see the number of views by the second. This gives you an indication that something is happening in that thread.

The whole idea here is to improve the forum as best as possible for us fellow posters. Instead of having it updated every hour why not every 10-15 minutes...........of course after every view would be the best.
