DEVELOPING STORY: Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the 52-year-old woman known as the "D.C. Madam," is believed to have committed suicide at her mother's home in a trailer park in the Tampa area, Tarpon Springs Police told FOXNews.com.

Palfrey was found guilty on April 15 by a D.C. jury of racketeering and money laundering related to her operating a house of prostitution. Palfrey had threatened to reveal the names of her clients — many believed to be high-profile political and business figures — if prosecutors went forward with their case.

Florida Cops: Suicide Victim Is 'D.C. Madam'
TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (CBS) ― Police say a woman believed to be the one convicted of running a high-end prostitution ring in Washington has been found dead of an apparent suicide in a Florida Gulf Coast town.

Tarpon Springs police say a body they believed to be 52-year-old Deborah Jeane Palfrey was found in a shed near her mother's mobile home Thursday morning. She left a suicide note, but police did not disclose its contents.

Palfrey was convicted April 15th by a federal jury of running a prostitution service that catered to members of Washington's political elite, including Senator David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican.

She had denied her escort service engaged in prostitution, saying that if any of the women engaged in sex acts for money, they did so without her knowledge.

Palfrey caused a sensation last year when she announced that to raise money for her defense, she intended to sell her phone records to any news outlet willing to pay. Palfrey said her defunct business, Pamela Martin & Associates, was "a legal, high-end erotic fantasy service" that serviced elite clients.

She was convicted on all counts she faced: Money laundering, using the mail for illegal purposes and racketeering.

Three of Palfrey's clients testified during the weeklong trial in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, explaining how they found the service, how often they called, what they were hoping for and whether they got it during their visits.

"When a man agrees to pay $250 for 90 minutes with a woman, what do most men expect in that time?" prosecutor Daniel Butler said during closing arguments Monday. "In that context, it's pretty clear. Most men want sex."

But the trial concluded without revealing many new details about the service or its clients. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., was among possible witnesses, but did not take the stand.

Besides Vitter, the trial also concluded without the testimony of military strategist Harlan Ullman or Randall Tobias, a former senior State Department official. Both men had been named among possible witnesses.

One of the escort service employees was former University of Maryland, Baltimore County, professor Brandy Britton, who was arrested on prostitution charges in 2006. She committed suicide in January before she was scheduled to go to trial.

Last year, Palfrey said she, too, was humiliated by her prostitution charges, but said: "I guess I'm made of something that Brandy Britton wasn't made of."

Everything is a fucking conspiracy LOL Please. She HAD her Trial, and LOST. If there was more shit to come out, 1)it would have and 2)no one would believe it anyway since she is a convicted felon.

She killed herself 100%

How is it the DA's fault? Isn't that their job? Are they supposed to selectively choose which crimes to prosecute and which ones they don't? The blame lies squarely on her if she did in fact kill herself. This country really needs to stop blaming others for what goes wrong in life.

If this thread was in the poli forum we would have the Vatican and the Pope as leading suspects in this case by now.

Heard of the Appeals process? < November_Girl > 05/01 12:34:10

I don't remotely think she was resigned to 50 years in prison. Convictions are almost always appealed ... new information is always presented. That kind of sentence hanging over one's head could make one willing to start giving up names and details ... something some "elite" politicians couldn't risk.

They have campaigns to run ... expensive television ads to convince us that they're good, honest Americans working hard for US ... contributors and investors to pay back.

I don't believe for one moment these were suicides. I do believe we will never find out, their deaths will be forgotten, and those involved in their murders will reap the benefits of a complacent public
