Poker has cast aside its image of illegal smoky back rooms and concealed handguns that was the norm when Doyle was a road warrior. The watershed event seems to have been Moneymaker winning the WSOP, which led to the explosion of poker, its use as cheap TV fodder and an improved image.
Sports betting has not similarly reworked its image. Its not suitable for TV. My generation likely equates it with "The Sting", a great Paul Newman, Robert Redford movie set in the 30's.
The image is completely different in the UK where there are corner bookies everywhere. Many will go out Saturday lunch-time, place soccer bets, have a drink at the pub and discuss the games then return home to watch them mid-afternoon, making it a common lifestyle choice.
