You can see how a Josh Hamilton or Justin Upton were the 1st overall picks, but Delmon Young looks like he has no ability what so ever and I am talking about a guy who doesn't pan out, but this guy just sucks!

Am I missing something on him or what? Tampa traded him and he hit 280 last year, they must not believe in him either.

They traded him cause he's a thug.

He was a #1 pick cause he has a good arm, can hit and as decent speed.

Roach is correct. Tampa Bay let him go because he had major attitude problems not because he was lacking in any of the five tools. Plus the Rays have their outfield pretty much set for the next 10 years with Crawford, Gomes, Upton, and Baldelli (DL).

It bascially came down to numbers. Delmon definately has the skills and will probably end his career a.300 hitter with 15-20 homers a year.

Obviously, I have not seen enough of him to have the same perspective as you guys, but when I think of a 1st overall, I'm thinking 5 tool player with true power. I know Upton doesn't have the power, but Hamilton you can see how he was taken over Beckett.

well...from what I understand...my buddy was drafted in the same draft/round as Hamilton & Beckett back in '99.

Hamilton had every tool in his arsenal...and was obviously the talk during pre-draft workouts & camps.

I've heard the same about Delmon Young...and scouts really look at the athletic potential...as my buddy was very fast, great arm, good size, etc...so he was drafted pretty high in that draft.

Just one problem...he could never become a 'hitter' and the best he could get up to was .270 avg...but he's still kicking around in AA ball, now trying to become a relief pitcher.

Which essentially shows you that athletic potential is a big factor on people like Delmon Young...as already noted, he had great size, good speed, great arm, and it didnt hurt that he's related to Dmitri.

I question how much of Delmon you have actually watched and how much about the game of baseball you actually know?

Are you making these statements based on his .264 batting average after a slow start in April?

Tampa didn't trade him because of his ability, they traded him because of his attitude. No one has ever questioned the kids ability. They questioned his desire to be taught, his desire to improve his game, but never his ability as an OF or Hitter.

He has great arm strength
He has good speed (6 SB this season)
He has good power

Its no fluke that the kid (he is 22) put up dominant numbers in minor league ball. That stuff didn't happen by mistake, it happened because he was/is good.

As a 19year old he batted .336 in AA ball in 84games.

In 2006 w/ AAA Durham he posted the following numbers as a 20yr old:

86games, 108hits, 8hr, 59rbi, 22sb, .316avg, .341obp.

In his rookie year w/ Tampa as a 21 year old:

162games, 186hits, 13hr, 93rbi, 10sb, .288avg, .316obp

Young is just scratching the surface with his offensive abilities, he will be more than fine this year, and he will hit over .300 a lot his career, with 100+rbi years, 25+hr years, and 20+ SB.

Oh yea, he has a laser rocket arm too

There are actually 5 new tools now.

Strike Zone Judgment/ Management (Singles don't mean shit)
Hitting for power
Arm Strength
Arm accuracy
Baserunning. (NOT base stealing, though it does factor in)

Delmon so far has shown Arm Strength and Accuracy, and baserunning. and has failed to show the other 2. Like Francouer, he will always be massively overrated and doesn't have superstar potential.

If he has a rocket arm why is he playing left. Have you seen play the field for Min this season, he looks lost out there.

He will not hit .300 this year.

At least he's playing. The Padres' franchise was set back 5-10 yrs when they passed on Verlander and Stephen Drew (among others) and took Matt Bush who is still languishing in the minors

he sure doesn't have johnny damon's arm..

Fielding prowess – Delmon Young was one of the best fielding right fielders in the American League in 2007. Young’s 16 assists were 3rd in the league among RFs and, according to ESPN.com, Young’s range factor (Range Factor ((PO + A) divided by innings) was 4th best among AL right fielders.

and this...

<TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=2 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR class=bg4><TD>Fantasy Analysis</TD></TR><TR class=bg2><TD>Young is tied for the major league lead with four outfield assists and also has six stolen bases, both saving runs and generating them without knocking the ball out of the park. "He's very talented. We expect really good things out of him," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We're just trying not to put too much pressure on him where he feels like he has to hit 40 home runs. Just play and play the game the right way. And he's done that. Run balls out. Listen. He works in the outfield. He's done fine." The Twins have never been too concerned with power numbers. They preach use of the entire field, adhering to the basics of smart hitting and letting the homers come when they come. The Twins might not be concerned with homers, but Fantasy owners are. Young is off to a slow start, but is still worth owning in Fantasy leagues for when he does turn it on.

From Wikipedia:

"It is quite possible Bush may be the worst overall selection in the history of baseball and a black mark on the entire Padres organization for years. Several fans have likened him to another San Diego draft bust Ryan Leaf."

The Padres 1st round choice of Tim Stauffer in the same draft as Delmon hasn't panned out that well either.

Haven't heard anything about him since he got hurt last year. He was tearing up rookie ball as a pitcher (at least in his first few outings) and had a major arm injury.

Any new news on him?

He will not hit .300 this year.

Ever seen Michael Cuddyer's arm? Guess not.

And a lot of players won't hit .300 this year. Most of them won't be 22-year-old everyday players, though.
