Why does pro leagues allow players to own horses?

Im not saying there is anything wrong with it myself.
I just dont understand the double standard.
The Pro leagues wont let a MLB player bet on basketball, and NBA players cant bet on football games etc...

But yet they have no problem allowing these players to own horses that people bet millions of bucks on.

Drew Brees had a horse in one of the races yesterday.
My neighbor who plays for the Caralina Panthers also has many horses that he races.

Again, I have no problem with it at all.

Just wondering about the double standard.

Owning a race horse doesnt necessarily mean you are betting on them. Anyone with the price of admission can go to the track and that includes pro atheletes. They can also go to Vegas and gamble if they want. I have never heard of case of a player going up to the window in a Vegas sportsbook and betting on his or against his own team mainly because he has to be on the field, ice, or court etc for the game.

I do know of players and coaches that have over the years played poker in Las Vegas and I am sure plenty have played casino games also.

I am sure there have been plenty of cases where players have had friends or releatives make bets for them if they have someone in Las Vegas. The key is betting legally is fine. Using bookies ala Pete Rose another story altogether. Lets say I am friends with AROD and in Vegas and he says while your there bet $5,000 to win on the Rangers today, who is going to proove he did anything wrong.

Hes a very modest person. He built a house in his parents back yard about 5 years ago.

Not saying his place is a dump, but if you look at it, you would not imagine that the person that lives there is worth over 50 million.

Hes one of the smart ones, you wont read about him living under a bridge 10 years from now.

in Las Vegas are the keys words; its apples and oranges in my opinion.

The NBA, NFL, MLB ETC.... does not allow there players to bet on sports in Las Vegas from what I have heard. Maybe GD can confirm this 100%, but its funny they cant bet on sports, but own horses that run for no other reason than to bet money on.

Honestly, I don't know if that is a league rule or not. I can tell you if one of those players came up to the window to place a bet, it's not like an alarm would go off and the book wouldn't take the bet. In fact, unless it was a prominent player betting against their own team no one would raise an eyebrow.

I have seen horse and dog owners bet both on and against their horse.

And I've also taken bets from boxers/trainers on their fights. Never taken one where they bet against themselves though. If they did that, I would be running across the street to get down.

To be honest I do not know what a baseball player for example can do if he visits a Las Vegas Sportsbook and bets the Super Bowl. I have never heard of any kind of scandle regarding this kind of activity.

Back in my table games days, I dealt or was a supervisor to many professional athletes from all different sports. Seems them playing in the casino does not raise an eyebrow.

I know for a fact MLB players can bet on anything but baseball.

Betting on baseball is a one year suspension and betting on your own team is lifetime ban.
