What makes a person get a lot of tatoos?

Watching Darren Williams I just wonder why a person gets so many tatoos. I saw the interview with Jeremy Schaap with Mike Tyson who has that ugly thing around his eye and I just don't get it.

What is it that makes a person pay all the money to get permanent ink all over their body and I hate to sound like I'm being racist (I'm really not) but you can't even see tatoos on African Americans if their skin is darker so why do it?

And what's with the porn stars and tattoos?
It's distracting.

People are so into body art these days. I don't know, just the way things are.

I have 6 tattoo's and the easiest explanation on to why I have ink on my body which is permanent is because I want it there? Many people who get a tattoo, often don't settle with 1?

I don't have a concrete answer as to why I have ink on my body except that I like it and at the end of the day, that is all that matters. Not what you or anyone else thinks when they see me walk around on the beach covered in ink.

But when you're 65 with grandkids will those 6 tatoos of whatever on your wrinkly skin really look that great? You can't be in your twenties forever.

I'm not attacking anyone but I don't have any tatoos and am just wondering why a guy like Lebron James gets tatoos everywhere when you can't even read or see them.

Honestly, when im 65, I'm not expecting to be impressing anyone with my shirt off. And for that matter, I don't have tattoo's done to impress anyone, they are for myself

This is what I'm getting at. You say they're for yourself. What do they do for you? Do they talk to you and tell you you're the man or what? What do they do that makes you want to get more?

No not everyone. But I'd guess the majority.

With the general public....you either like tattoos or you don't. If you do, you get one or a handful and they are usually covered.

With atheletes and rock stars...you either like tattoos or you don't. If you do, you can sleeve up b/c you don't have to worry about what a boss or client thinks.

I got my first one last year at 37. They are addicting but I've got to keep them from the elbows up due to work. If I didn't, I would probably have a full sleeve.

Watched the NO-Spurs game last night. Noticed there were six players on the court at once without tats. That was amazing.

it seems this is a polarized subject. either you hate tats or love 'em. People that love 'em probably don't think twice about someone who doesn't have any. But people that dislike tats get a pretty strong feeling everytime they see a person with lots of tats.

I, personally, don't like tats that appear to be frivolous. I don't have any myself, and at 40, I may never have one. I would consider one to represent an event or person under special circumstances, but that day has not come yet. I'm guessing quite a few people out there have a tat "in memory of" [someone] to which I have great respect for.

As for frivolous tats that cover a large % of the body. I don't get it, but to each his/her own. Most people in life at some point look back at a haircut or a clothing style they had in younger days and cringe. I know I looked like a jackass with hair parted in the middle and "wings" on the side back in junior high in the early 80's. Thankfully it was just a haircut style that I could change at will. I have to believe that people with permanent frivolous tats are likely to encounter that feeling later in life and not feel too good about it. I guess that's what makes the world go though man. Go out and do your thing.

Notice they also cover their vehicles with stickers also - obviously trying to call attention to oneself as a result of low self esteem.

I've noticed that most people with tats are blue-collar and/or uneducated.

The same reason everybody was getting suvs 5 years ago. Because everyone else does it, and people are sheep.
