Actually it may even be much less than that, but when I was working and interviewing prospective candidates I could tell within seconds whether they were hire-worthy.

Much like the real world, meeting a poster it's not hard to literally size them up in less than a minute and tell if they are real or full of shit.

Something to chew on for you young kids who are prospective job candidates.

Just went through about 20 interviews, and I agree that being natural and smooth is absolutely crucial to getting the offer. Being comfortable with yourself is important. Think about what hand you hold items in, so you don't have to awkwardly switch hands to shake the persons hand.

It has less to do with that with seeing through the person to their true intentions.

Don't know if it is acquired or inherited but I can smell a bullshitter a mile away.

I have worked at the same place since my internship during my senior year in college (only been about 5 years).

I have zero clue on how to excel at interviews.

Are you guys serious that 15 sec is what it takes. So all I gotta do is dress nice, smile, and have a good handshake/opening comment?

Are we saying the rest of the interview is almost meaningless (unless i start grabbing my junk or picking my nose)?

GD - good post, absolutely true.

The next extension of what you're talking about is how your carry yourself. I work in consulting. Sounds hard, but its the easiest job in the world. You don't have to know all the answers, you just have to exude confidence like you *might* know the answer. How you act on the first day of the contract - and the first few minutes of meeting the client - is everything.

Not quite. I can definitely tell you within 15 seconds if you are elimated from contention. Sometimes even faster (if you are late for example).

If you pass the first sniff test, sometimes it takes a little longer to make sure the guy/girl is not all "first impression." It is not scientific. It is just a feeling that you get from doing a number of interviews. It does not matter what question I ask you, you need to say something interesting. Be different. Be memorable.

By that, I don't mean wear a crazy outfit or bring me a present. I mean have confidence. Look me in the eye when we talk. Walk with purpose. Don't slouch. Be engaging without being swarmy.

It sounds a lot easier than it is in practice. Over 90% of the people I have interviewed over the last 10 years are duds.

i guess there is no way to be fool-proof....but wouldn't you think there are a huge % of people that are fantastic employees but interview bad?

Is their only chance to get a mailroom job (with an MBA) and work their way up?

just be clean and dress as sharp as u can at an interview.

that means get a book on grooming and follow it...

clean nails and well groomed hair...

no facial hair either..all facial hair is is ass hair that grows on your face

You're full of shit. You probably unknowingly wrote off a lot of quality people and in your ignorance think you have all the answers.

Jack Welch said even after 20+ years of sizing up some of the best and the brightest, he still often made errors in assessing in interviews who would work out and who wouldn't. I forgot the batting average he gave, but it was not impressive.

Bottom line is, people DO make snap judgments about others - in business and in life in general - and while we think we made the right call on our assessment of them, we often did not.

Glad I never intervewied with a BJ know-it-all like yourself.
