I've got a job interview there next week and if I am offered the job I'll probably consider moving there. Anyone got any opinions of Phoenix or of the greater metro area there in general? I've heard Scottsdale can be pretty entertaining and fun. The downtown seems small, however, seems to have some nice restaurants and other places. The girls seem to be pretty attractive by and large as well....

Any opinions/insights helpful....

I've lived in Phoenix/Scottsdale for the last 7 years and It's a great place to live if you can find a good job. There is a lot of competition. Scottsdale is the best place to live. Women in their 20's/30's everywhere always out walking and at the bars. The nightlife is great and so is the climate for 10 months out of the year. There's not much happening in downtown Phoenix except for Dbacks games. The downtown is dead on weekends. The city of Phoenix is pretty much little Mexico as well. It's gone down hill the last few years but they're trying to kick the illegals out so hopefully things will change.

I work for a title insurance company and you can pretty much name your price for a home in certain areas. There are foreclosed homes everywhere and I've seen prices drop 30% in the past two years. Several houses coming through our office that are just going into foreclosure as well and the people are looking to unload fast and cheap. The only problem is that the bottom may not hit till this winter or next spring so prices may continue to decrease but if you're in it for the long term it's worth buying.

Thats interesting....What areas are you seeing the best bargains? Any areas in particular like Tempe, Chandler, Scottsdale, etc...

Also, why is downtown so dead? Being from Boston thats just bizarre that a city of 4mill people in the major metro area would be dead. However, I guess people just go elsewhere to entertain themselves....

You can find some really good deals in Chandler and the city is one of the cleaner cities in the valley. There's some good nightlife down there as well. Tempe is mostly a college town so there is always a lot going on but the value there isn't nearly as good as Chandler or Mesa. Parts of Tempe are pretty run down as well. Scottsdale is more expensive but there's hardly any crime and the nightlife is some of the best in the nation. You can still find some really good deals in Scottsdale right now for homes though and there are quite a few rentals as well.

The valley is so spread out that it's not worth the drive to head downtown on the weekends . Most people head to Scottsdale in the east or out by the football stadium in the west. I've been to a few Diamondbacks games downtown and the bars outside the stadium are allright for awhile but once the fans head home the crowd gets pretty shady. They're trying to re-invent the area though.

Cheap housing, food, ect.. Lots of hot women here, as well as a pretty good nightlife and sporting events.

Only thing that I hate is the traffic and the summer heat.

Have lived in Scottsdale for the last 6 years. For someone your age I would definitely chose to live in the DT Scottsdale area. Plenty of activity and easy enough to get where you want to go.

My advice would be to rent a place for 6 months, so you can acclimate yourself to the Valley and figure out where you want to establish some roots.

PHX is working really hard in the redevelopment arena, but are 5-10 years away from serious impact.

Let's talk about the heat since that is the biggest detraction. It's hot, don't get me wrong. But it can be dealt with if you have a decent AC in your vehicle and your home.

You don't need AC in the morning during the summer except the really hot days. Mornings are really very nice. When the sun goes down (around 7-8 pm) it's bearable being outside walking around. I used to walk my dogs every night just after dark in the summer.

The only problem time is in the afternoon when you get off work and have to get in your oven of a vehicle. But after 5-10 minutes it's cooled down by your AC. In summary, it's bearable, especially considering it's decent weather from October to May.

As far as living, I preferred the East Valley: Tempe, Mesa and Scottsdale. North Phoenix wasn't bad but not as much to do as the East.

You can rent a decent 3-bedroom house in Tempe for $1400/mo. Some older houses are cheaper.

The problem with the Phoenix area has been wages. I hear they are starting to pay decently. I was making $40k-$50k per year a few years back.

All in all it sounds like some good endorsements for the area. Obviously traffic can be an issue anywhere, but from what I've read it is not very bad compared to other big cities. Seems like a nice place to live though...
