As if we didnt already know that the network itself has gone down hill over the years.

Anyways, it is an absolute shame that they do not give more coverage to the NHL Playoffs. Because they carry NBA games, they oversaturate us with NBA PLayoff coverage and I could care less about that no defense playing thug league (Just my opinion, I know a lot of you are fans of the NBA and thats cool. I just dont like it. I tried, but cant. Yes, I know there sre some good playoff stories etc, I dont mind the coverage, but they just push it down our throats on purpose it seems to slight the NHL.)

I can see ignoring their regular season like they did, but these are the playoffs. Just because they dont carry their games anymore they ignore the league coverage. That is piss poor journalism on their part. Even Mike and Mike in the morning hardly talk about anything NHL.

I enjoy all sports, but NHL Playoff hockey is the best live sport to watch. The Penguins (homer plug) have a great bunch of young stars and them and Detroit are rolling through the playoffs, and ESPN ignores them aside from their 1 minute NHL segment with Barry Melrose tossed in between Tennis and Track. The Sharks/ Dallas series had some phenomenal games as well as a few other series. I just think it is sad that the worldwide leader in sports ignores one of the biggest pro leagues during playoff time with some great teams, great up and coming superstars, and great matchups.

With the exception of Steve Levy and John Saunders, not a single anchor at ESPN could name three players in the NHL and that includes me giving them Sidney and Alexander.

Few people give much of a shit about hockey any longer so it would be silly to cover it in detail.

Be fair. Linda Cohn could probably name 20 Rangers.

NHL Attendance Sets Record
Exceeds 21 million in 2007-08

NEW YORK – A season of suspenseful races and outstanding performances on the ice was accompanied by historic levels of attendance at National Hockey League arenas in 2007-08. Total attendance of 21,236,255 and the per-game average of 17,265 set records in each category and marked the third consecutive season of growth.

"Our fans have outdone themselves, and everyone at the National Hockey League is extremely appreciative,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “This unprecedented support is only the latest affirmation that our fans are the best fans anywhere.”

NHL teams played to 93.6% of capacity over the 1,230 games in outdoing the 2006-07 season figures of 20,861,787 and 16,961 per-game, or 91.7% of capacity. In 2005-06, the figures were 20,854,169 and 16,955. NHL games have attracted 20 million or more in each of the past seven seasons.

In 2007-08, the six Canada-based teams once again sold every possible ticket. With sellout crowds of 21,273 at Bell Centre for each of their 41 home games, the Montreal Canadiens again led in per-game average. The Pittsburgh Penguins sold out their season for the first time in franchise history and were joined by the Philadelphia Flyers (19,556), the Minnesota Wild (318 consecutive sellouts of 18,500-plus since they entered the League), the New York Rangers (18,200) and the Anaheim Ducks (17,193). Several other clubs, including the Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks, were virtually sold out.

The St. Louis Blues, (up 41% to 17,610 per game), the Chicago Blackhawks (up 32% to 16,814), the Washington Capitals (up 11% to 15,473) and the New Jersey Devils (up 10% to 15,564 at their new home, Prudential Center) all enjoyed significant increases.

The aggregate and per-game average figures included sellouts of 17,426 for each of the season-opening games at between the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks at O2 Arena in London. For the purposes of calculation, the Buffalo Sabres were credited with a normal regular-season sellout (18,690) for the Winter Classic against the Pittsburgh Penguins on New Year’s Day at Ralph Wilson Stadium; including the full Winter Classic attendance of 71,217, the aggregate NHL attendance increases to 21,288,782, and the per-game increases to 17,302.

My favorite it when we get 15 mins of arena football coverage and 3 of hockey. Could it have something to do with espn airing arena games? I dont think arena has more fans then NHL.

Watch the upcoming year. Basketball crowds are bigger in part to having seats on the floor instead of the boards. Hawks should sell out the majority of their games. While Chicago isn't really thought of as a basketball city, the Bulls have sold out the majority of their games in the post-Jordan Era. Hawks in the 60-70's were the hardest ticket in Chicago and the games on WGN next year only help.

Hockey may be a great sport, but americans don't watch it on TV. If I remember correctly the ratings for Hockey were awful when espn had them on regularly.

Bingo.ESPN doesn't extensively cover it on TV, because thats what the US sports market aks.People are probably going to the games...but don't you guys remember the news that bowling matches were drawing bigger ratings than hockey games on ESPN?NBA TV ratings have been suprisingly very good over the past few years. Hence, why it gets more coverage. The live in-game attendance is a counter point, but the TV ratings are more accurate of a gauge.

The best hockey man at ESPN is Barry Melrose.
Too bad he's a gay blowhard.

the reason ESPN doesn't cover hockey is that it's the only sport that they don't carry on their network. ESPN blows anyway.

MTV = ESPN
20 years ago they were the top of the list.
They both had a vision and direction.
Now they got to hip for their own good, and are all over the place if you know what I mean.

hockey sucks thats why. and there attendance numbers are inflated by outdoor games where 70,000 people attended. its a regional sport with a dumb way to grade who wins games. this league is so shitty they give losing teams points!

and i said this before, if you want to see the real thugs watch the NHL. the NHL is the only place ive seen video of someone trying to kill somebody(bertuzzi/moore), and people whacking others upside the head purposely with sticks. when was the last time you saw an nba fight. the thugs are all in the nhl.

the game is boring, the players are overpaid and dont try, the league deserves to be where it is. hopefully it stays there or moves on out to canada where it belongs!

To fight ignorance and you asked the question at the start of the thread? What a ridiculously ignorant statement to bring up attendances. Attendance in local markets for an exciting "live" sport has absolutely nothing to do with what sport people care about nationally. It is beyond comprehension how retarted this argument is. Are you really that dumb? I didn't think so. In case you were wondering very few give a fuck about the sport any longer just like I said before!! That is why they can't even put it on a TV channel besides Versus. Comical how far the sport has fallen.
