Is there anything between San Francisco and Portland?

Sorry for the many off topic threads, but I got me a new box of wine today and not only does it contain cheap grapey goodness but apparently the will to start pointless threads within.

Seriously though, I am plotting a West Coast driving trip and will be heading from Vegas to L.A., possibly San Diego, but then want to take a leisurely drive up the coast to San Francisco. I'd really like to visit Portland and Seattle too but the drive from the Bay Area to Portland alone looks like 13 hours.

That is a long time to be strapped in a car with company let alone with myself, so I was wondering how the drive is and if there is anything in between that would be worthwhile.

Only thing I could find was Coos Bay (birthplace of Steve Prefontaine), but not much else.

Any info would be appreciated.

Of course, and talking about wine, you have Napa Valley. Just dont get drunk and get a DUI halfway up to Portland....

Are you kidding me ? The Oregon Coast is the most awesome drive in the entire USA ! I have been to almost every state in the USA and I wouldn't put any site in front of the Oregon Coast. Coos Bay, Sea Lion Caves, Newport, Florence, Haystack Rock, Depoe Bay, Whale Cove, Cannon Beach, Seaside, Astoria.... Need I go on ? Take the Coastal highway and skip the freeway !

I second this. Go up 101 and make sure you hit Napa Valley. The Oregon coastline is great. If you take I-5 you're a knucklehead.

Definitely going the coastal route, may take PCH all the way up as far as it goes.
Napa Valley is a must if I go north of the bay area, but will be careful not to drink and drive.
Oregon coastline sounds good according to Kermit and I found a better route if I go that far north.

Its kind of a boring drive on the 5 past Stinson Beach. I got a spedding ticket in Weed,Ca going 59mph. 2 miles later got another ticket for my passenger NOT having seatbelt on, even though I did. It is a long drive, is pretty once you hit Oregon though. It is a good 4-5 hrs from SFO to Eureka.

How long you gonna be staying there?
Thought about it, but the plane ride would be as long as driving plus I'd still have not seen three of the cities I want to see before I die (San Francisco, Portland, Seattle).
I can always save Thailand for next year.

When in Rome.......
You are welcome to drink some and drive in Oregon, especially way down south. We only have like 4 state coppers in the entire state. Just remember to act sober when passing through the little shit towns you come upon. Those coppers live for tourists.

If you go up I 5, you could take a visit to Crater Lake. It's a ways from the coast, but worth seeing.

Avenue of the Giants - A Destination Vacation: This world-famous scenic drive is a 31-mile portion of old Highway 101, which parallels Freeway 101 with its 51,222 acres of redwood groves. It is by far the most outstanding display of these giant trees in the entire 500 mile redwood belt and is accessible to all with convenient services provided along the way. The Avenue of the Giants is surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world. Take time to picnic, camp, hike, swim, fish, raft or bike ride in the cool hush of these ancient redwood forests.

Once you do this scenic route, you will do it again. Like we say to all guests, your welcome to visit , but please don't overstay.

Just be sure to plug your nose when you pass through Tillamook. All of that cheese and ice cream doesn't grow on trees.

Oregon is not the part that worries me, it is the stretch in California getting there.

May have to stop by Eugene and say hi to the Duck cheerleaders too.

Redeye, if I stop by your neck of the woods will you put up some halftime lines for me?:missingte
