Lester’s
losing patience

Boston Red Sox
Red Sox starter
Jon Lester felt like he was living in a Bill Murray comedy film following yesterday’s 4-3 loss to the Washington Nationals at
Fenway Park [map].
Lester threw 107 pitches and gave the
Red Sox [team stats] a quality start only to get his third straight no-decision and second during his team’s disastrous
1-5 homestand.
The left-hander went seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. He remained stuck at 3-4 in 13 starts while his ERA dipped to
4.57.
“It seems like its just ‘Groundhog Day,’ everyday,” said Lester. “In every start for me I just can’t seem to get a break. I can speak for myself that it aggravates the piss out of me. I hate going out there and losing regardless if I’m pitching or not. I know guys (in the clubhouse) are
frustrated and rightly so.”
Lester’s pitchers duel with Washington’s Jordan Zimmermann fell apart on him in the seventh inning. Ian Desmond and Tyler Moore opened the frame with consecutive singles to left field. The baserunners advanced into scoring position with a double steal, then Lester retired the next two batters. But two runs scored when Danny Espinosa lofted a shot that glanced off the face of the Green Monster just over the outstretched glove of left fielder Darnell McDonald. Espinosa’s second double of the game and fourth of the series gave the Nationals a 3-2 lead.
“I felt like I threw the ball good today and a 300-foot fly ball to left was the difference in the ballgame,” said Lester.
The Sox starter fell into a uneasy rhythm after receiving a leadoff jolt in the first inning. Espinosa opened the game with a hard shot off the wall in left-center and eventually scored the game’s first run on a grounder to third base.
“The first inning felt the same — just the guy hit the pitch down and away off the wall,” said Lester. “That’s getting frustrating too, making good pitches that get hit.”
Lester was able to escape a bases-loaded jam in the third inning and was in control until the fateful seventh.
“I was trying to get into a rhythm and I was able to do that,” said Lester.
