Barkley bluff? Casino, DA say Hall of Famer hasn't paid debt
May 20, 2008
CBSSports.com wire reports

LAS VEGAS -- A Nevada prosecutor and a Las Vegas Strip casino say Charles Barkley hasn't settled his $400,000 gambling debt, despite what he said on television.

Officials with the Wynn Las Vegas resort and the Clark County district attorney's office say there has been no payment and no contact with the former NBA star and TV analyst.

During Turner Network Television's pregame show before the NBA playoffs Monday, Barkley said the debt had been paid and he was giving up gambling.

The Wynn Las Vegas resort alleges in a civil complaint filed May 14 in Nevada state court that Barkley failed to repay four $100,000 casino markers, or loans, received last Oct. 18 and 19.

District Attorney David Roger has promised to file a criminal complaint if Barkley doesn't pay up by June 9.

This is how the rich live. You dont pay someone bitches and sues you you pay. If not then they don't pay. I know several of people who have been scammed by sports players. plus Charles pays his local bookie in advance. I think those markers were for Casino games not sports he bets alot more on sports than those figures.

Vegas casino says Barkley has paid $400,000 debt
By KEN RITTER – 45 minutes ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former NBA star Charles Barkley has retired his debt to a Las Vegas Strip casino that sued him after he failed to pay $400,000 in gambling loans.

But the civil lawsuit remains open, and it's going to cost Sir Charles $40,000 more to get out of the legal doghouse.

"We received a check this afternoon from Mr. Barkley, and it's been sent to the district attorney," said Jennifer Dunne, spokeswoman for Wynn Las Vegas. The resort filed a civil complaint May 14 in Nevada state court alleging Barkley failed to repay four $100,000 casino markers, or loans, received last Oct. 18 and 19.

"We've been paid in full," Dunne said. "The rest is the district attorney fee."

Clark County District Attorney David Roger said the case will remain open, with Barkley facing possible criminal prosecution, until he pays a 10 percent processing fee.

"We've been in contact with his representative," Roger told The Associated Press. "We expect a check for $40,000 within the next few days."

Barkley, a Turner Network Television basketball analyst, said during a pre-game show Monday that he was to blame for the outstanding gambling debt.

"I screwed up and didn't pay them in a significant amount of time," Barkley said. "Could they have handled it differently? Yes. But it was my fault."

The 45-year-old Barkley also said he would stop gambling, at least for a while.

"For right now, the next year or two, I'm not going to gamble," he said. "Just because I can afford to lose money doesn't mean I should do it."

TNT spokesman Jeff Pomeroy said a Barkley representative sent a $400,000 check Monday by overnight delivery to the Wynn Las Vegas collections department.

But Roger said Barkley's obligation grew to $440,000 once a civil lawsuit was filed.

"He had an opportunity to pay representatives of the Wynn hotel and failed to pay," the prosecutor said. "Once we open a case, the assessment is due and payable."

Roger had promised to file felony theft or bad check charges if Barkley didn't pay the Wynn debt. A theft conviction could carry a penalty of one to 10 years in state prison. A felony bad check conviction could bring one to four years.

Barkley played 16 NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, and played on the USA Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992 and 1996. He was an 11-time NBA All-Star and was league MVP in 1993.

He has talked openly about his gambling, estimating during a May 2006 interview with ESPN that he'd gambled away about $10 million over the years.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Charles Barkley is headed back to the tables in Las Vegas to play in a poker tournament about a month after pledging not to gamble. He says it's all for charity. The former NBA star is scheduled to play in a celebrity poker tournament at the 2008 World Series of Poker on July 2.

The "Ante Up for Africa" event is designed to raise money and awareness for the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. More than 300,000 people have died and 2.5 million have been displaced since ethnic warfare began in 2003, according to the U.S. presidential envoy to Sudan.

Players in the poker tournament put up $5,000 to play, and are asked to donate at least half their winnings. The event raised more than $500,000 last year and finished with the top two players agreeing to pool their winnings and donate the full $350,000 to the cause. Of the field of 167, 18 players won money.

Barkley, now an NBA analyst for Tuner Network Television, has pledged to donate all of his winnings to one of the two designated charities if he wins next month, said Sal Petruzzi, a TNT spokesman.

Barkley said on the air during the NBA playoffs he wasn't going to gamble for "the next year or two" after he was sued by a Las Vegas Strip casino in May for failing to pay $400,000 in gambling markers, or loans.

The 45-year-old Barkley repaid his debt to the Wynn Las Vegas casino along with a $40,000 district attorney's fee.

"For right now, the next year or two, I'm not going to gamble," Barkley said afterward. "Just because I can afford to lose money doesn't mean I should do it."

Dallas Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd said this week that Barkley was keeping to his word when he saw him at a May golf tournament in Palm Springs, Calif.

"We were at a casino and he said he was on the wagon," Kidd said during a conference call to promote a celebrity golf tournament. "He's strong. He didn't gamble. I think Charles, once he decides not to do something, I think he's pretty good at keeping his word."

Barkley played 16 NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, and played on the USA Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992 and 1996. He was an 11-time NBA All-Star and league MVP in 1993.

He has talked openly about his gambling, estimating during a May 2006 interview with ESPN that he'd gambled away about $10 million over the years.
