Book is excellent. Tells the inside story of big-time Texas high school football. Very enjoyable!

Thanks for the feedback so far, has anyone seen the movie and if so how far off is it from the book?

Most movies are not even close to the book, but Friday Night Lights is pretty good. I read the book when it first came out about 15 years ago and it remains one of the best sports book I've ever read. The movie was good also, but the TV show is excellent as well (it's not anything like the book or the movie, but it is excellent).

Great movie, one of my favorite sports films easily. I like how it gets into the inner details of how much pressure is put on them by a football = life kind of town.

We're both getting old, BB. It was 1990 when the book was first released and as a lifetime (through 1997) resident of North Texas I certainly recall it created quite a stir.

The most memorable reference that sticks with me was that at the time of the analysis by Bissinger, Permian spent more each year on athletic tape than they did for textbooks for the entire school.

I read it back when it first came out and it was a fantastic read. Very easy, will pull you in for sure. I refused to see the movie b/c I knew it would bear little relation to the book and from what I have heard, I was correct. Whether or not it bears any relation to the movie, you should read the book.

Steve,

You're right, now I remember where I was living when I read it.

The TV series, which I believe is on break until December, is one of the best shows on TV today. It is nothing like the book and it isn't too wrapped up in the football. It is the "White Shadow" of this generation. Coach Taylor and his wife are the most "real" couple on TV. If you have kids, especially those of high school age, the show will ring true. (Not to mention, every single female character is smokin' hot.)
