"We delayed it as long as we could to get him some more playing time down there," said general manager Walt Jocketty.
"But it's a good time. The team is starting to play well. We didn't win on the coast, but we were in most of the games.
"Jay can add an element to this club. It creates a bit of a crowd in the outfield, but we'll work it out.
Bruce, a 21-year-old outfielder, forced the Reds' hand by playing so well for Triple-A Louisville.
Bruce was hitting .364 with 10 home runs, nine doubles, five triples, eight stolen bases and 37 RBI in 49 games for the Bats. He struck out 45 times with 12 walks.
He ended his Bats stint with a nine-game hitting streak.
As for a corresponding move to clear room for Bruce, Jocketty said: "We've talked about a couple of different things. We'll meet in the afternoon with Dusty (Baker) and the coaches and make a decision."
Without a player going on the disabled list, one move could be designating Scott Hatteberg for assignment.
Hatteberg hit .310 in 116 games last season, but the 38-year-old veteran has been relegated to pinch-hitting duties with the emergence of Joey Votto at first base.
The last two times Votto didn't start at first base, Jose Valentin did.
Hatteberg has struggled off the bench, going 1-for-14 as a pinch-hitter, and is hitting .173 overall.
It's unlikely the Reds would be able to make a trade to open a spot.
"I've talked to some clubs, but I don't think anything's going to happen that soon," Jocketty said.
Jocketty saw Bruce play in person a week ago in Louisville.
"That helped seal the deal," Jocketty said. "But I've been getting good reports about him all year, including from the staff there (Louisville). They said he was ready a while ago."
Does this mean Bruce plays every day? "I hope so," Jocketty said.
Jocketty said as recently as a week ago that it was a matter of playing time that has kept Bruce in the minors.
But center fielder Corey Patterson's struggles have continued. He went 0-for-8 in Sunday's 12-9, 18-inning loss to the San Diego Padres. Patterson's average is .203 overall.
Bruce has been playing mostly center field with Triple-A Louisville.
Bruce will play everyday. Center field is likely the spot.
The Reds will have to juggle their batting order. Center fielders Patterson or Ryan Freel have been leading off.
With shortstop Jeff Keppinger out and Jerry Hairston Jr. playing there, Hairston might fill the leadoff spot until Keppinger returns.
The Reds could also use Freel to lead off when he spells Edwin Encarnacion at third base.
Bruce was the Reds' first round pick (12th overall) in the 2005 draft.
He played well his first two years in the organization. He combined to hit .266 with nine home runs and 38 RBI in 55 games at Billings and Dayton his first year.
He hit .291 with 16 home runs and 81 RBI for Dayton in 2006.
Last year was his breakout year. He moved from Single-A Sarasota to Double-A Chattanooga to Triple-A Louisville.
He combined to hit .319 with 46 doubles, eight triples, 26 home runs and 89 RBI.
Baseball America named him the Minor League Player of the Year after the season. He was the first Red to win that honor.
Bruce was nominally in the race for the center field job in spring training. But he was slowed by a quad strain and did not hit particularly well.
STARTER SHAKEUP: The Reds adjusted their rotation in the aftermath of Sunday's 18-inning marathon.
Johnny Cueto will start tonight's game as scheduled. Bronson Arroyo will move up to pitch Wednesday's game.
He'll be followed by Aaron Harang and Edinson Volquez. That will give Harang and Volquez an extra day of rest. Both pitched in relief Sunday.
Matt Belisle, who was roughed up in Sunday's game (41/3 innings, five runs), is listed as Saturday's starter.
