My 2 cents. --- Ray Allen - big props..
After playing as well as they have during the series for three quarters. The Celtics were horrible in the 4th quarter Wednesday night, their play reminded me of the 4th quarter the Lakers played in the game they won against Utah on May 16th (game four of that series score was 108-105 Lakers).
The big difference is that game was played in Utah and was excusable as far as the Lakers go. The Celtics had no excuse or business letting last night's game get to 102-101 with 8.2 seconds left when they led by up to 17 points in the 3rd quarter. They looked horrible in the last 5 minutes especially.
The clutch jumper by Ray Allen (barely missed being a three by a few inches) with a minute to go and 3 seconds on the shot clock right after Rodney Stuckey's super clutch three ball from the corner made the score 100-99 Boston. The basket by veteran all pro Ray Allen whose all net had to have it jumper making the score 102-99 electrified the insane crowd. That shot was IMO the single most clutch shot of the series so far.
Ray Allen's clutch 2 point long jumper over Rip Hamilton saved the day for a faltering 4th quarter Celtics team with a minute to play. Final 106-102 Celtics.
Ray Allen finally woke up scoring 29 points when the Celtics needed them most. Allen made two crucial free throws with six seconds to go also that gave the Celtics a three point lead and let them play foul the shooter for the rest of the game so Detroit could not tie the game with a three. The All Pro showed he is not done yet. Allen played 39 minutes, was 9 of 15 from the floor including 5 of 6 from behind the arc and 6 of 6 from the charity stripe.
KG also made two clutch free throws with 3 seconds left and ice the game by putting the Celts up four (Stuckey missed a critical FT just before Garnett was fouled). Garnet scored a game high 33 points (most by KG this playoff year) on 11 for 17 shooting and 10 of 12 from the line. The Pistons outscored the Celtics by 5 points from the free throw line.
Unless Chauncey Billups pulls a no show (I know he was hurt) like he did in game three, I don't see anyway The Celtics can avoid a game seven with a win in Detroit on Friday in game six..Detroit should win without a lot of drama if they have all key personell available.
One unknown wild wild card now in the mix is Rip Hamilton's right elbow strain (he hurt it with eight seconds to play last night), Xrays were negative so it is probably a non issue. On the other hand Hamilton left the arena wearing a sling. Time will tell. No Hamilton would be curtains for the Pistons as far as winning the last two games of the series goes. Unless the elbow is badly hyperextended he will be in there, this is a gut check for both teams. Hamilton leads Detroit in scoring with 22.2 PPG for the series.
Rasheed Wallace's next technical will result in a one game suspension.
Kendrick Perkins was the early star with career playoff highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds for Boston.
NOTE: With 3:08 to play the Celtics led by a score of 98-90.
