Have worked blue collar all my life here in Michigan, warehouse/manufacturing. Well you know how that story ends here in this great State. So I'm needing to head another direction, go back to school, whatever it takes. It's kinda scary so late in life but I have no choice.
Any of you that have gone the same route perhaps, I would love to hear how you did it. I'm looking at going back to school for IT or perhaps criminal justice as the demand in those two fields seems high.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I just finished reading the book "The Passion Test". I highly recommend it for answers to questions like yours. I found it very helpful. Bottom line you only live once do what you love, the money will come.

you might want to check online for Federal jobs. for instance TSA security at the airport is usually hiring. its not dangerous, pays decently and federal jobs have really good benefits as far as healthcare and timeoff

Be open to relocating, the key is flexibility. Hell if you are willing to go to alberta there are 100K + paying jobs in oil fields..

Good for you buddy. If you're unahappy go after it and do something else. The fed jobs are at www.usajobs.com and that's a good start especially if you can get into the system.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

right. if you start out as a labourer and prove yourself worthy you can make huge money as you gain experience. if you got a trade, it's even better. i believe some welders make close to 100$ per hour.

i'm trying to get a connection there myself. pushing 50 too. the turnover is unreal in the oil patch. people come and go like crazy. if you get a job on the rigs themselves, be prepared to be covered in oil and dirt. a friend i know says the labourers are called "rig pigs".:money8:

My wife went back to school in her mid 30s and was working for 1st year full-time. I know it isn't easy if you do that, but keep at it and you will finish faster than you think. You can load up on classes, talk with profs and let them know your situation. Don't get frustrated. I speak from experience, I had been out of work for several months until recently. If you are going to go to school now is the best time.

Good luck!

Here's a serious reply for you:

Find your nearest ITT Tech because they now offer a program in "Construction Management". Put in the time, get the cert. There is a HUGE demand for good construction project managers. I haven't seen a posting that doesn't offer at least 100K and there's jobs all across the country. If you get the cert, learn the ropes on one real site, you'll be making 6-figures in no time.

Good luck!

Become a video poker/slot pro and/or take up farming.

The current food crisis in this world is a boom for farmers...........being you live in Michigan, Iowa is just a stones throw away, a place that has numerous casinos scattered throughout the best farmland in the country.
