Watching a little of the braves/reds game on fox and imo with the players this guy had over the years, he has got to be one of the most over-rated coaches in the last 20 ys.what do you guys think...........ck

Perhaps your assertion reflects a bet made today but Bobby Cox has the third highest total number of major league wins in the history of baseball.
He has been voted manager of the year four times and has been The Sporting News manager of the year 8 times. Won divisional titles 14 straight years. He doesn't have Maddux in his prime or for that matter Glavine or Smoltz but he is 2 1/2 games out of first place in a pretty tough division. Guaranteed Hall of Fame manager.

If that is the criteria you might want to look at Joe Torre over the last six years with the Yankees. I think he 'underachieved', with what he had, more than Bobby Cox.

I am glad the braves are winning today but listening to the brave telecasts and always hearing of what a legendary manager cox is and how many division titles he has won has really got to me over the years

division titles? ok great.Do the yankees talk about division titles,no,they brag about world series titles.Cox is a good manager ,maybe a great manager but you have to win the big ones to really be among the greats.

Cox is not great and not good he is horrible. With the lineup he had and the competition in the division he could have penciled in the lsame lineup and made no moves and won the division. How did he do before they had a big payroll? He had a terrible record and was fired I believe.

Let's see starting piitching of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz in their prime. Right there you almost win the division. Luckily the Yankees haven't figured out that pitching wins.

Great manager I don't think so, 0-20 his teams last 20 one run games. EddieMac have you been in the drug cabinet again?

If you have one of the 5 highest payrolls in baseball, that alone should make you a contender in any division, especially Atlanta. For many of those years he had the highest payroll in all of baseball, the Yankees of the 80's. You should win the division.

Here is Bobby without talent:

1978 NL West Atlanta 37 162 69 93 .426 6
1979 NL West Atlanta 38 160 66 94 .413 6
1980 NL West Atlanta 39 161 81 80 .503 4
1981 NL West Atlanta 40 55 25 29 .463 4 First half of season
1981 NL West Atlanta 40 52 25 27 .481 5 Second half of season

1982 AL East Toronto 41 162 78 84 .481 6
1983 AL East Toronto 42 162 89 73 .549 4
1984 AL East Toronto 43 163 89 73 .549 2
1985 AL East Toronto 44 161 99 62 .615 1

Nothing too impressive there.

It's kind of like saying Phil Jackson is the greatest coach ever. He has only had arguably the best players ever in the game to coach. Phil can talk about greatness when he takes the Clipper or Timberwolves to the championship.
