manny is my favorite hitter to watch. He is probably the only guy who will not go into a slump trying to reach a milestone. He doesnt care enough about them to sweat it.

Wow - 500 dingers for Manny - most excellent achievement.

BALTIMORE (AP)—Manny Ramirez joined the exclusive 500-home run club Saturday night, hitting a drive off Baltimore Orioles right-hander Chad Bradford to become the 24th major leaguer to reach the milestone.

Ramirez drove the first pitch into the seats in right-center in the sixth inning. He watched the flight of the ball, then took off around the bases.

He exchanged a high-five with first base coach Luis Alicea, then hugged on-deck hitter Mike Lowell as he crossed the plate. Many of his teammates greeted him as he reached the dugout, where he received more hugs and bounced up and down in an embrace with David Ortiz and Julio Lugo.

The solo shot gave Boston a 5-3 lead. It traveled an estimated 410 feet.

Manny was in a horrible slump, by his standards, leading up to his 500th homer.

In fact, prior to the last three games, he was really struggling.

Rare show of good sportsmanship or dumb move - you tell me.

The home run ball was collared by Damon Woo, a 40-year-old Red Sox fan originally from Nahant, Mass., who was sitting in Section 94 with his brother, Jason, who shielded him from the mad scrum that followed. After being escorted by an official from Major League Baseball on hand to authenticate the occasion, the brothers agreed to exchange the ball with Ramírez for autographed balls and bats, an uncommon act of unselfishness at a time when the baseball memorabilia market has set the price for such souvenirs in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"This is it - we've got 500 and it's all yours," Damon Woo said to Ramírez as he presented him with the ball after he and his brother were ushered into the visitors' clubhouse.

Why give it up? "It's his achievement. It's his accomplishment. It's his ball," Woo said.

Red Sox spokesman John Blake said Ramírez intends to auction off the ball on behalf of a Boston-area children's charity.

Details from Boston Globe.

Ditto

I once read in SI where clubhouse workers for the Red Sox said that Manny is one of the most generous players they have ever been around.

Remember he wouldnt sign the deal with Boston unless they brought over the bat boy from Cleveland.

He gets IT--he just doesn't care. He plays for himself and not for you. I thought he would have watched it longer....he deserved to

Manny Ramirez signs minor league contract with Rangers

Manny Ramirez, out of Major League Baseball since 2011, has signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.

by Matt Slovin, USA TODAY Sports

After a short stint playing baseball in Taiwan, 41-year-old Manny Ramirez has signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers, the team announced Wednesday.

He will report Thursday to the Class AAA Round Rock (Texas) Express, where he will work out for a few days before being activated.

Ramirez, a 12-time All-Star, has been out of the major leagues since 2011, when he played five games in April with the Tampa Bay Rays. He chose to retire when faced with a 100-game suspension after failing a test for a performance-enhancing drug. In December 2011, his appeal reduced the suspension to 50 games, which he served after signing a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics before the 2012 season.

"Obviously, with our history, we like giving guys second chances," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told reporters Wednesday. "We know on and off the field the good and the bad in Manny's career. We're inclined to give him an opportunity here. When it comes to playing for the Rangers, two things are critical to us. One, obviously, you have to be talented and productive, and, just as important, you've got to fit our winning culture here in Arlington and throughout our organization."

This season, playing for the EDA Rhinos of the Chinese Professional Baseball League, the designated hitter was batting .352 with eight home runs, 13 doubles and 43 RBI. His on-base percentage was .422, and he was slugging at a .555 clip.

Ramirez, whom Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler called "one of the greatest right-handed hitters of all-time" Wednesday, is a career .312/.411/.585 big-league hitter. He ranks 14th on the all-time home run list with 555. After spending the first eight years of his Major League Baseball career with the Cleveland Indians, Ramirez won two World Series in his next eight seasons with the Boston Red Sox. The first time he won with the Red Sox, in 2004, he led the American League in homers with 43 and was named World Series MVP. His career has also included stays with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox.

"If he's productive and we feel he'll fit our culture in the clubhouse, we'll give him an opportunity," Daniels told reporters. "If either of those ends don't pan out, kind of no harm, no foul."
