anyone try this? it seems legit, and a phenomenal deal, especially for people who are overseas.

www.magicjack.com

Basically, you pay 40$ for the magicjack which plugs into your USB port of your computer, you then plug a regular phone into that device and you have a phone line and phone number.

The best part, is your 40$ payment for the item includes one year of service and after that it is only 20$ a year.

Those living in Costa Rica or other countries this would be fantastic. Or if you stay in hotels often.

It offers unlimited calling to Canada and USA

anyone tried this?

I'm on a trial right now...works pretty good. One problem for me is there are no local area codes available so any calls into me would be long distance.

You also don't need a phone with this device. If you have a PC microphone you can use that and listen to the call either with a headset or over your speakers.....it also has voicemail, caller ID and call waiting. It's a real no brainer for me in that I will no longer use the regular phone for long distance and it gives me another phone line in the house.

that is a bit of a problem for me, since they dont have montreal yet, but It would be an excellent way to get a Las Vegas phone number or other number.

seems quite incredible for the price. espcecially for all the Gringos in Costa Rica.

Their international rates are very cheap as well so anyone who has relatives overseas and likes to gab will make out. Think they get 2 cents a minute from the US to Europe. Also the device is portable..you can plug it into your laptop as you travel. And it also sends you an email with the wave file attached when you have a voicemail waiting!

but if you mail it to your overseas friends, they then have a US based number, and they can call you anytime for free. (as long as they have a computer and a hi speed internet connection)

Im trying to figure out a way to have high speed internet and madjack.

If there is a way to do that without having to have cable internet im all in for madjack.

I am a happy directv customer that refuses to go cable internet.

Is there a way I can do this?

My parents have Madjack. It is totally legit. The quality is great. It is trully 20 bucks a year.
The only negitive is that they dont have rights to all the area codes. If you live in a town that does not have your area code you have to have an out of town area code.

Thats not really a bad thing since everyone has free long distance these days.

The other negitive is if you electricity goes out you have no phone.

u dont have hi speed internet now? what internet do you have?

I have DSL, and although i have a regular phone line, the phone company doesnt require you to get a phone line to get DSL here, they give you what is called a "dryloop" number, you can get the internet and not pay for the home phone.

Yes I have DSL.
They require you to have phone service over here to have DSL.
The cable company also requires you to have cable to have CABLE internet.

I refuse to go the cable route because I have directv.
I cant drop my regular phone service because that would also drop my DSL.

Whats the point in having madjack if I cant drop my regular phoneline?

thats ridiculous,

over here you can get DSL even without a phone line, they assign you what is called a "Dry Loop" number.

You can also get Cable internet even if you dont have cable TV for only 10$ more (which is a total rip off).

You should call your DSL company and verify

Its true, at least as of about 6 months ago when I was trying to get on with vontage.

I could not sign up with vontage because of the same reasons.

Used it when I was in Brussels and China for business. Worked like a charm. Just plugged it into my USB port, and dialed home like I was using my cell phone. I don't go out of the country without it anymore. It is totally worth it if you travel a lot on business.

CHOPTALK - I use a wireless air card from Sprint. The speeds are pretty good and you can buy routers for them so that you share the connection. My whole house runs on it and I've had zero problems with it. Great alternative to DSL/Cable and its portable!

Do you have a link for that?
Sounds interesting.
