9 PM Local?! That is insane and idiotic! The thing should start no later than 8, and preferably 7 locally. Any doubt that this is made for TV should be put to rest..

gotta be so Lakers fans on the West Coast can watch at night.. it really is only a half hour later than the pistons-celtics series which started at 8:30 ET every game, so it could be worse.

9 PM local, game will end around 11:30 local.

No other Time Zones even come close to this.

And given its on ABC, it means longer TV timeouts, maybe even more of em

Hell i'd be surprised if the game even started before 9:15 or so!

I know they don't cater to them--but my 8 year old who is a Big Celts fan will only get to see a half at most.

I figure on a 9:17PM tap off after 15 minutes of hype and commercials, effectively eliminating a segment of viewers on the East Coast. Playing on a Saturday nite instead of Sunday might have been a ratings bonanza but they apparently research these matters, one would suppose.

finals always start at this time, no matter the location. Nothing new here at all.

Hell, it wasn't all that long ago when the Finals were on tape delay.

From 1975-1979 CBS aired all NBA Finals games live (usually during the afternoon). Starting in 1982, CBS resumed live coverage of all NBA Finals games. During this era, CBS aired weeknight playoff games from earlier rounds on tape delay at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time (airing games live when the game site was in the Pacific Time Zone). CBS continued this practice until at least the mid-1980s.

CBS didn't want sportscasters to give the final score on the 11 p.m./10 p.m. newscasts. They preferred the games to not be over by that time if they were going to be aired on tape later that night. Most CBS games were either 8:30 p.m. or 9 p.m. local starts. For instance, CBS aired Games 1-3 of the 1981 Western Conference Finals (between the Houston Rockets and Kansas City Kings). Ironically, CBS featured both Western teams finished the regular season with a record 40-42 instead of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers (both teams finished with a 60-22 record).

1986 was the last year that CBS ever aired an NBA playoff game on tape delay. It was Game 3 (on Friday, May 16) of the playoff series between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets. The game aired at 11:30 p.m. after having a 9:30 p.m. tip.

The time doesn't matter, and neither does the juice. And the points don't matter either. Lock City!

What time does the average LA working stiff get home from work?
5:00 pm (8:00 pm EST)
I can't see why ABC can't start the game at 8:47 instead of 9:17.

Brock,

You generally seem like a pretty smart guy, but you really can't be this stupid, can you?

The City of Los Angeles is in the Pacific Time Zone, which means it is 3 hours behind the Eastern Time Zone and since the Lakers are playing, their fans may want to watch the game, not really sure about this, but just a guess.

I am sure some LAL fans can confirm this.

Again, they have been doing this for more than 20 years.

I will be at work during the entire game.

9EST means 3pm over here...

I say they make the start time around midnight EST and then it will be 6pm in hawaii and 9pm on the west coast.

WINNER!

How does he City of LA handle it during the regular season when the game starts at 4 PM Local?
