For the first time I'm gonna be out there with no rental car. Everytime we go we all agree it wasn't worth the cost for the rental car. Problem is I haven't even been in a cab in like 10 years. Maybe somebody can give me an idea of how much some cab rides cost.

Strip to downtown?
Airport to Strip (Venetian area)?

What is a standard tip?

I'm assuming it wont be hard or take long to catch a cab, seems they are all over the place when I've been there before.

Airport to Strip, approx $11-$15. Venetian is more like $15 or so. There seems to be more cabs in Vegas than NYC.

Doug--The majority of cabbies in Vegas do not pay for gas........the company pays for it.

In fact, CHECKER-YELLOW-STAR use propane, not gasoline.

So what is the deal with tipping. Is it just a buck or two? Percentage? No clue guys, help me out.

What bus goes downtown and how much does it cost? Bus ride doesnt seem that bad. Is it the same double decker that goes up and down the strip?

Any northbound bus on the strip goes downtown for like $2, and runs often.

Tipping, imho

20% average, with a $3 minimum

Anything under $10 should get $3

Over $10, add 20% and round up to next dollar

I strongly suggest making sure you have a decent variety of bills, including ten to 15 singles, so you can easily round up without needing to ask for change.

Never been to the LV airport, but I've also never been to a major city airport during hours of 8am -10pm that didn't have a ready line of taxis waiting for fares.

The only delay, per se, is for them to methodically roll forward and load passengers.

Can't imagine it would be more than 30 minutes once you hit the curb.

Here is a little tip for you guys, whenever you are in Vegas and going from the airport to your hotel, find one of the guys near baggage claim who has the carts to help people with their luggage. Tell him you need help with your luggage, even if you only have one carry on, they don't care. They bring you to the front of a separate line and you skip the entire line waiting for cabs to the hotel. Throw the guy a $5 and you are off in less than three minutes, not having waited in line. Of course, if there is no line there is no need to do it, but if you roll in on a Friday there is always a line.

Rental car is $20 a day plus gas. I can't see taking cabs being cheaper. Certainly not more convenient. The exception being if you want to drink.

Last time I used cabs extensively was in a five day trip to Wash DC and Manhattan.

There's a definite real dollar value to the relief of mental aggravation that comes from driving in strange areas when your principle goal is to relax and enjoy time with friends, family.

I think we took about 30 cab rides between the two cities and dropped no more than $200 with tips and all.

No MAPquest...No wrong turns...No DWIs...No cops for any reason....Cabbies great source of information when you're short on time and seeking local visitor's advice.

At $40 a day (in my example above), you can have your rental car for $20 + gas.

Me? I'm the guy sitting in the backseat of a yellow sedan with my lady friend - sailing past you in your rental sled, stuck in a wrong turn lane and 20 minutes late to your show time.

anything longer than 1 minute is too long for me so i never wait, go out the opposite door and take a shuttle, it will be cheaper for 2 people or less than a cab, and have you to your hotel faster.

shuttles are good as long as your hotel is not the last one to get dropped off....for 2 people probably save a buck or two but that's about it.

yeah, i'd say expect a minimum 15' wait for a cab...that line gets crazy at certain times of the day.

cabbies in vegas are pretty solid...they do not take you crazy directions like one poster said.

Don't take the shuttles and especially don't paid for a round trip, they almost never get you when you trip is done. You will be one of last stops as they start at the south end of the strip first. The taxi line at the Vegas airport is long, but moves very fast. Taxi to the Venetian s/b around $16. Usually tip a couple bucks, more if guy is friendly.

Bus from strip to downtown is $2 each way or $5 for a 24 hour pass (atleast it was last August), but it's stops often, is slow and usually very crowded. If you take a cab everywhere, it adds up pretty fast.

Have a great trip!
