MLB Match-Up Saturday – Cards trying to keep pace in Central

The St. Louis Cardinals are playing above expectations so far in the National League Central, as they were 3.5 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs. The Cardinals will attempt to cut into that deficit on Saturday when they visit the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park for the second of a three-game weekend set.

St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros– 7:05 PM ET
Adam Wainwright (5-3, 3.12) went eight innings for the second consecutive game in his last start, as the 26-year-old former relief man gave up five runs on seven hits while taking the loss as the Cardinals fell 5-4 to Pittsburgh at home. Wainwright was coming off a pair of one-run performances prior to this outing, and if he has a bad showing in one game, it has been usually followed by another one this season. However, Wainwright has been strong against the Astros this season, winning both of his starts with an ERA of 2.12.

Shawn Chacon (2-1, 4.41) lasted a single inning in his last start, giving up four runs on two hits to take the loss as the Astros were routed 10-1 at Milwaukee. Chacon argued with an umpire over a blown call, and it seemed to unsettle the 30-year-old, so he was taken out early to risk further trouble. After a year in the bullpen with Pittsburgh, Chacon is still getting used to being a starter again, but he has shown over his eight-year career that he has the talent to be a double-digit winner as he was in 2003, but he needs to learn to control his emotions better. One of Chacon's two wins this season came against the Cardinals, and he is 1-0 in three starts with an ERA of 2.70 against St. Louis.

The Cardinals could be suffering some fatigue due to a doubleheader in Washington on Thursday, but any series against a division rival should be enough to carry them through. If Chacon gets off to a bad start in this contest, it could get ugly for the Astros, who are running midpack in the Central and cannot afford to fall back much further. Take the Cardinals to roll to a comfortable victory in Houston on Saturday.
