That is hard to believe that the lake is gone. Major tourism $$ from Chicago and Milwaukee. It has been one of the main stories in Chicago all day.

Are Dells down the drain?

<!-- Article's First Paragraph --> <!-- BlogBurst ContentStart --> MADISON, Wis. -- ''The Waterpark Capital of the World'' wants the world to know that even though one of its signature lakes will be dry this summer, tourists shouldn't change their vacation plans.
The Wisconsin Dells Visitor and Conventions Bureau moved into overdrive Tuesday, reassuring tourists that 93 percent of businesses in the Wisconsin Dells area remained open, along with all major roads, after the 267-acre Lake Delton overflowed an embankment and drained the day before.
''We're all trying to take a positive outlook today to keep visitors coming,'' said Andrea Novotny, spokeswoman for the iconic Tommy Bartlett Show.
That show, a Lake Delton mainstay for 56 years, planned to reopen Thursday. Workers were cleaning up, replacing a ruined sound system, and expanding the stage show on land. Its 22 water skiers are out of jobs.
The area known for its 21 water parks is home to a $1 billion tourism industry.
While the water parks weren't affected by the flooding, other attractions, including boat tours, were shifting their routes Tuesday to stay afloat.
Steve Zowin, owner of Lake Delton Watersports Marina, said he will have no jobs for about a dozen of his 16 employees this summer.
''I can't see this lake come back in place for a couple of months,'' Zowin said.
''It's certainly a depressing thought. I've been building up the business for 29 years and to have it literally go down the drain, that's not funny.''

Been there dozen of times. The poor families that lost their homes have no insurance for their loss. Unreal. There is another dam in Mukwonago that will break and more might lose their possesions. Expecting another 2 inches of rain tomorrow and will already break the record of most rain in the history in Wisconsin in June by June 12th.

This is the real kicker: http://www.rrstar.com/news/x1517283347/Wisconsin-cleanup-continues-as-Bush-promises-quick-response
Homeowners in Lake Delton have learned they won’t get help from federal flood insurance after the 267-acre lake overflowed and drained Monday. Three homes were washed away in the village of 2,000 people about 45 minutes northwest of Madison, and others were damaged.

But Lake Delton homeowners aren’t eligible for the National Flood Insurance Program because the village didn’t adopt an updated map in 2001, said Russ Rasmussen, bureau director for watershed management at the Department of Natural Resources. FEMA, which runs the insurance program, updates its flood plain maps from time to time, and communities must adopt those maps before homeowners can buy the insurance, he said.

Rasmussen wasn’t sure how many communities failed to adopt the new maps.

“It happens,” he said. “I don’t want to say it’s common, but I wouldn’t call it rare either.”

He said he didn’t know why Lake Delton didn’t adopt its new map, but he said the maps do affect how communities can construct buildings.

Messages left for village officials, including the police chief, were not immediately returned.

Doyle said the state’s farmers should be OK if water drains from the fields in the next day or two, but if it lingers, there could significant agricultural losses.

Water receded at the Rock River near Johnson Creek, allowing authorities to reopen the westbound lanes of Interstate 94 going from Milwaukee to Madison. Detours were set up Tuesday night after rising water threatened a bridge.

Still, the Department of Transportation continued to monitor the situation because more rain was expected Thursday, Wisconsin Emergency Management spokeswoman Jan Klawitter said.

Portions of some three dozen state highways were still closed today because of flooding, and it was unclear when they would reopen, a WEM report said.
