I live in Ohio, my house is 28 years old, and it still has the original furnace and AC unit. The house is 2300 sq. ft., and the AC died today. I think I have figured out that I should replace both the AC and the furnace at the same time, so the question is, about what should I pay? Any specific questions I should ask when I get estimates tomorrow? And any specific units anyone recommends?

Thanks to the forum in advance.

I would ask for mercey on your soul. Hide the rolex and the nice car at the parking lot down the street. I would also try to report it as rape. Here in Texas if your AC goes out in the summer it isn't nice heater in the winter is not bad but AC in the Summer is bad news. I paid $2300 for a outside unit and the upgrades do to the new code. Good Luck and hope that your code has not changed much.

You really dont have a choice, with the new EPA regs a new outside wont matchup with ur old inside.

Get bids from several contractors, get 2 from each. 1 using standard 13seer equipment and another using 13+seer with the new freons. the standard f-22 will be outlawed in just a few years so you might as well switch now IF you can afford it.
To give u an example i recently got bids on a 5 ton job. 13seer standard unit was $6500 installed. A 16 seer unit using the new freon was 12,500...
Im sure 5 star has his reasons for his opinion but there isnt a lot of differance in any units under say 16 seer as far as quality. Its all in the installation as to whether it holds up or not.
Get ur bids and post them and we'll see what you got......

depends on how long you plan on keeping the house

long term, carrier and trane both solid

mid term - phillips a great value

short term (plan on selling the home soon) obviously cheapest possible

a good tip is to call down to your local wholesale AC place.....many times those counter guys will install themselves on the weekend and they are buying the unit at cost. Expect to spend $1600-$2100 this route
