The government does not really care because there is no money, aka oil.

The public really does not bother because it does not effect them and these people are basically foreign to them

Meanwhile, one of the greatest humans to ever live, and my personal hero, Aun Sang Suu Kyi, sits as a prisoner of house arrest while a military junta brings a nation to a halt.

Sure they don't have an impact on your daily life and they may be foreign and "yellow" people to you who speak a strange language, but my God how far have we fallen as human beings to literally not care about a whole nation of people just because they do not fall in line with our corporate profit scheme.

I'm absolutely emabarrassed as a person for the majority of so-called "humanitarians".

Keep it in offshore for a little while Rob, people need to know and understand what is happening.

These are still people and human beings and it really upsets me.

I don't get upset very easily.

Being over here while that is going on is unfuking real..there are 3 ships that were turned away by the government and now docked off Pattaya...these ships were loaded with supplies and medical help along with military personnel ready to help...who knows when they get in...only a few Thai personnel have been allowed in and things look bleak over here...Green Doberman was right on about the junta....a bunc of damn dictators who really care about getting re-elected and they could give two shits about human rights...really sad commentary because a lot of nations are trying to help but have been turned away by red tape...

No worries RF, just hope it doesn't get sidetracked in the ridiculousness of the poli forum.

So be it.

That shit bothers me VD, believe it or not I was considering going there not to party with you but as part of the Red Cross Mission trying to help.

Basically they said don't bother as we would be sitting there in Thailand helpless to cross the border. That literally makes me sick.

You should have seen some of the pics from the local paper...would have made you thrown up thinking what's up with this evil government...ships and planes with food and medical supplies and 95% of them couldn't get in...

Romo,
I don't think my hate was fueled toward the government, wasn't meant that way.
Just said it was a human tragedy and everyone is to blame and wish there was more I could do.
I was not trying to make this one of those anti-government rants and don't want to go on that tangent.
I really feel hurt in my heart what has happened though.

Does it bother you that about 100,000 people die every day from starvation or malnutrition? If not, why not? Why does it take a specific event to create a little blip of misery to get you concerned, when there are far greater orders of magnitude of misery happening on a daily basis?

Viejo,
From what I have been told, and I'm probably just slightly more attuned that the general public, there is basically nothing that can be done.
To have a helpless situation because of political agendas to be is abominable.
I hold her highness Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in the highest regard and hope you and others will read up on her in the future in hopes something will be done.

Daryl, where do you get your numbers from? The world has 6,000,000,000 people in it. If 100,000 people died every day it would take 165 years for the world to die off if you didn't take into consideration population growth which would likely extend it another 100 years.

On a related note, it astounds me that people in starving nations still have children that they can't feed, let alone take care of.

As far as Myanmar goes, thousands of people are dying due to the greed of the government. I read that the government is now charging people for the food and other aid that they are receiving. What can these people do to overturn this government? Isn't this enough for them to act?

If you assume a stable population of 6.6 billion (equal numbers of births and deaths) and an average lifespan of 65 years, then the population "turns over" every 65 years on average, meaning number of deaths per day equals 6.6 bn / (65*365) or about 300,000. If about one third of those deaths are caused by starvation or malnutrition then you get 100k.

The number is actually a bit less because were are a growing population, meaning more of the 6.6 bn will be younger than in a stable population.

But then again probably more than 1/3 of total deaths are from starvation and malnutrition because those deaths happen at a younger age than most other leading causes.

So 100k seems to be in the right ballpark.

On a related note, it astounds me that people in starving nations still have children that they can't feed, let alone take care of.

It astounds me too because animals, who supposedly are a lot dumber than humans, don't need to be taught to use condoms. When things aren't going so good for them they seem to figure out on their own somehow that reproduction is a bad idea. Maybe tribal power drives, maternal instincts and collective identity are more important than what western society gives credit for?
