I once read a stat in my coaching days that something like 60% of the time a leadoff man gets on he scores.

In todays majors, a lot of these bullpen bums walk guys religiously when they come in to start innings, or for that matter anytime when they come in. I sit amazed that managers keep going to relievers who walk too many guys.

It also amzes me when teams are up 2-3 runs late, and a reliver will come in and give up a walk or 2 walks......when all they have to do is throw it over the plate and let the hitter put it in play, because the game will not be lost on those hits. IF those guys hit their way on, and they score on a HR or more hits, so be it, but don't give it away. As a major leaguer, no excuse for these guys to be walking batters when its a 2-3 run game late.

i'd make a bet that relievers had a large % hold on the steroid era. Their flaws are just now being seen without any juice to handle 1-3 batters. Bums I say.

And so it goes......

bullpens in baseball are a joke for the most part. some exceptions, but mostly you never know what your going to get. that's when the game becomes a toss up, and the best made wagers turn into duds.

Some of it has to do with the diluted talent from creating expansion teams. Imagine all those players spread out across the league.

Walking the batter in front of a pitcher. It seems like half the time they get burned anyways.

Not playing small ball when in a low scoring game. A big inning usually doesn't happen if an offense is struggling or the game is low scoring.
