Im a big time Yankees fan and ive been thinking about this for a while...
He hit a grand slam last night that led the Yanks to the win after the game he is the star of the game and has to do postgame interview well this guy still needs a translator?
This is his 6th year with the Yanks also hes from Japan shouldnt this guy know english by now? and not need a translator?
This gets me kinda ticked off anyone else?

Some of these imports are just too comfortable with their home country and probably won't have any interest in America once their sport is behind them. Look at Vlad and how long he's been in this league. They just don't give a crap and are ungrateful to America for giving them the opportunity.

No. First of all the older you become the harder it is to learn a new language. Also, he probably is not to interested learning English because he will retire and return to Japanese. Also, Mandrian, Cantonese, Japanese, and some of the other Asian dialects are so different than English that it is hard to learn either way.

He may speak some broken English, but may not be confident and probably can't answer the question fully in English.

Enjoy his hitting and worry about getting consistent pitching instead.

And so it goes......

I think it's more that he wants preserve that part of his culture. The Japanese are very big on that.

Maybe he's too busy working on his hitting and fielding.
I wouldnt say fielding cause hes pathetic.
I hear you all but still think its weird he doesnt know it better.
Seems like an intelligent guy.

I sorta think that I'd have a difficult time learning Japanese, if the situation were reversed, so I'll cut him some slack.

I do think I could pick up Spanish,French, or German if I had to, at least they use letters, that Asian symbol stuff doesn;t look easy to learn, to me.

Have tried to learn Japanese on my own since I travel there sometimes on biz. It is HARD.

Also a Yanks fan. Like Dsethi said Matsui knows conversational English.

Japs just don't learn English. I've never seen one speak it. They're probably the only nation on earth who refuse to learn it.

Doesn't Ichiro also use a translator?

I think I get his point. He thinks because someone works in the USA part of the time. He should spend his waking moments studing to speak English. Though there is no need for him to do so.

He says he has thought about this for a while and it ticks him off that he doesn't speak english.

I think he should think about it a little more.

Does he have any idea how hard it is to learn another language. How much time you would have to spend to do it.

Maybe instead of learning English he likes to spend time with his girlfriend and play with his kids.

I have lived outside the USA for 7 years in a spanish speaking country and I am not fluent in spanish. Of course I can order food and pick up most conversations. Do I want to go on TV and be interviewed in Spanish. NO. I would look like an idiot.

But the notion that he needs to learn English I find just stupid.

Why would it tick you off that he doesn't know English? Him speaking fluent English has nothing to do with helping the Yankees win ball games (which he has done a lot for them this year). If he doesn't want to learn English that's his choice, not the Yankees fans. He probably won't even live in the US when he retires anyways, so it's not a big deal.

Hey, I'd be glad to give ya Shannon Stewart for Matsui is you want. Stewart can speak perfect English.
