I hear this term a lot for poker players. Is a fish considered someone completely clueless, overbetting his bank, waiting for the river miracle card.....etc?

"Go Fish"..played this game many many years ago
The sheer joy I got from telling my opponent (usually my cousin Marnie) to go fish was what made this such a great game. I think one game she kept getting every single card she asked for and I got aggrivated so I told her to go fish even though I had it and towards the end of the game she busted me for it and we werent friends the rest of the day. Oh, teh stupid things kids do.

Biggest clue to spotting a fish is how many hands they play (ie see the flop). If they think "any two cards can win" then you have yourself a legitimate catfish paying for those flops . . . if they go all the way to the river because "one more card would have made my 7-high straight" then you have yourself a nice bigmouth bass on the line :)

That, and also drunk players. Had a friend that played semi-professionally and his rule was to never show up earlier than 11PM because players weren't drunk enough yet

Another way to spot a fish is when they don't understand
pot odds and implied pot odds.

For example, if you're playing no limit, and you see that someone
has called a $2 bet for a gut shot into a $5 pot, when the person
betting only has $5 left, then they've paid $2 for 4 outs when the
most money they can get is $10, and they only have a 4/47 = 8.5%
chance of hitting.

In order to call a $2 bet with 4 outs, you need be able to pull a pot > ~$24
if one of your outs hits.

i think like they said in the movie rounders, if you can't spot the fish........you are the fish.

generally means a poor or beginning poker player, someone who will stay all the way to the river with any draw or ace high etc.

Though in online poker, no matter how solid you play if u suck out on someone you will be called a fish or a donk it seems (im guessing donk means the same thing, i think its trendy to say right now)

we used to use that term to denegrate anyone in our crew who quit drinking too early in the night. ex: 1am and a round of shots is bought. the guy who pretends to drink it or outright refuses gets heckled with : "FISH". it was usually the same guy
