Celtics Vs Atlanta series.
Atlanta had a chance but lost 99-65 in game seven. Atlanta scored 26 points in the first half while Boston scored 27 in the first quarter. The score at the end of the 3rd quarter was 79-44 Boston. The 4th quarter much like tonight's 4th quarter was purely academic. The Hawks won game six at home 103-100 and lost the series and game seven on the road by 34 points.
The truth is Atlanta improved it's record for the 4th straight year and played very well at home. Proven by their opening night performance by knocking off Western Conference power Dallas, 101-94, in their first season opener at Philips Arena since 2000, and the team’s first Opening Night win since strike-shortened 1999. Five nights later at Philips they knocked off Phoenix, 105-96, pulling down 56 rebounds, 39 on the defensive end (both season-highs).
Those wins were a harbinger, as Atlanta would also knock off the Western Conference regular season champion Lakers, Utah, Denver, Cleveland, and Orlando. Philips Arena would be scratched off the list of fun places for opposing teams to visit in Atlanta, as 25 of Atlanta's 37 wins came at Philips, then they were 3-for-3 in the Playoffs.
“Hawks-teria” reached unprecedented heights in Game Six against Boston, when a franchise-playoff-record 20,425 fans squeezed into Philips.
"I didn't know we had this much support," said center Zaza Pachulia with a laugh about the deafening crowd. "It definitely felt good. This is a young, emotional team and we definitely feed off the fans. That definitely helped us to win those three games. We got major, major help from our fans."
In their four loses at Boston the Hawks lost by a grand total of 101 points.
Ya, Atlanta had a real good shot of winning that series.
The Celtics did dominate The Pistons and Lakers.
Take The Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls of the 1990s. You would think no one ever pushed them given the team they had.
The 1992 NY Knicks took the Bulls to 7 games in the Eastern semis.
Those same Knicks won 4-3 in games over the Bulls in the 94 Semis.
The Orlando Magic beat the Bulls in 6 in 1995 in the Eastern semis.
The 1996 Bulls lost back to back blowouts to the Seattle Sonics before winning the series in six. The year they won 72 games during the regular season.
Atlanta won game two at Chicago in 1997
Utah won two games and lost game 6 by only 4 points that same year in the finals.
Indiana took the Bulls to 7 games in the 1998 Eastern final, losing by 5 at the United Center in game 7.
Utah one two games in the finals that year and lost game six and the title by 1 point 87-86 after winning game five in Chicago 83-81.
My point is not many teams go 16-0 in the playoffs (none that I know of). The object win anyway you can.
When the Seattle Sonics won their only title in franchise history they defeated Phoenix 4-3 in the Western Conferference finals. Winning game 7 in Seattle 114-110, after winning game six 106-105.
Honzie even warned everyone with his first sentence:
At the risk of being accused of being a Boston elitist, beware this team til 2010, will be very tough to dethrone
He is a poster with a right to an opinion, just like everyone else. Being a Celtic fan and predicting a newly crowed champion will be very tough to dethrone until the season after next (2010) is not exactly sticking ones neck out if you ask me. The Celtics have as good a chance as any to defend their title in 2009.
