MLB Match-Up Thursday – Yankees look to send Padres home with a loss

The New York Yankees kicked off this three-game interleague set with a blowout win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, and they will aim to end the series in the same fashion when the two meet at Yankee Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

San Diego Padres at New York Yankees – 1:05 PM ET
Josh Banks (2-0, 1.29) was brought into the Padres' starting rotation thanks to injuries to Jake Peavy and Chris Young, and the 25-year-old is giving a good showing of himself so far. Banks earned a no-decision in a 9-5 loss at Cleveland, giving up three runs on five hits over five innings with four strikeouts. The Padres claimed Banks off of waivers from Toronto in the offseason, and the young righthander has been a solid addition to a rotation that has been snakebitten this year. Banks faced the Yankees twice in relief as a member of the Blue Jays in 2007, giving up a run on two hits over two innings of work.

Joba Chamberlain (1-2, 2.48) is still searching for his first win as a major-league starter, but he keeps coming closer. The 22-year-old righthander lasted six innings, his longest start, and allowed a run on six hits while earning the no-decision as the Yankees won 2-1 in Houston. Chamberlain struggled with his control at times with two strikeouts and four walks, but he is showing the heart and skill needed to be a pitcher in the big leagues, and his first win is just around the corner. This will be the first time Chamberlain has faced the Padres in his two-year career.

The Yankees rolled to an 8-0 shutout in the first game of this series, powered by a pair of homers by Jason Giambi. This will be a good match-up of young pitchers looking to make their way as starters in the major league, but Chamberlain will have the full backing of the Yankee crowd. Take New York to grab the upper hand in this series with a victory on Thursday.
