It is immaterial what motivated Retief Goosen to claim Tiger Woods was malingering while winning the US Open. The facts are: Goosen did make claims to the media.

They may have been taken out of context. They may have been jocular. Or, they could have been a stupid mistake on the part of the South Africian.

Nevertheless, Goosen's remarks were completely and utterly wrong—and must be condemned.

If the situation had been reversed, would Tiger Woods have reacted in a similar manner?

Prior to this weekend, Goosen has always been a person of decorum—as indeed have been most touring professionals. Hence, the publicity his allegations received.

He has been welcomed on the US Tour, but it remains to be seen if his popularity will continue or will he stand alongside another European "Mr Grumpy" and be judged accordingly ?

Retief Goosen has made a cardinal error, and in so doing must make a public and unequivocal apology to Tiger Woods. Should he fail to so do, the USPGA would be fully justified in withdrawing his playing rights.

Try playing golf at that level with one leg. You have no idea how much pressure he has to put on his left leg and how much pain he was in.

It's also not his fault he is the face of the sport and he doesn't tell the media what to write, so stop blaming him. You could argue what he did this weekend was or was not brave, but it was incredible, and that can't be debated. One of the greatest sports moments I have ever witnessed, without doubt.

And oh yeah, Goosen is a clown and I doubt anyone would give a shit if they guy got booted from the PGA. I haven't heard it in context so I can't say for sure (we all know the media makes stories out of nothing, just like the Tom Brady "my leg hurts so much, I can't jump or run fast" BS story from a month or so ago), but if he did say what is written the guy has to make a public apology or I guarantee the media never lives this down when talking about him.

He *should* apologize as a decent person, but why would the PGA withdraw his playing rights? That seems ridiculous to me.

I TIVO'd the playoff and Tiger was without a doubt hurt but it was apparently much more painful for him when he tried certain types of shots, especially off the tee when he was going for distance and also trying to shape the ball from right to left (a draw).

Goosen is a two time US Open winner and should know better than to accuse a fellow player of faking an injury. What did Tiger have to gain by faking, he was always in the top group and led for much of the weekend so he could not have been looking for an excuse if he lost, most of the time it looked liked he was going to win. He has lost before and never used injury or anything else an an excuse.

I just watched his tee shot on 18 from Monday's playoff when he was down by one shot. He hit a high draw that was right down main street but Tiger limped badly off the tee.

Goosen's statement ""It just seemed that when he hit a bad shot his knee was in pain and on his good shots he wasn't in pain" just made no sense, especially on the most important shot of the tournament - his tee ball down a shot on the 90th hole.

Tiger won the tournament on the next hole when Rocco Mediate bogeyed the 7th hole (1st playoff hole) to Tiger's par..

All just a bunch of chit...what do you think the books would have done, if they knew of Tigers' extensive injury prior to the tourney or any round, thereof...PC at its best, nothing else...no go home...

Goosen backs off (a little).

Sporting News staff reports

Retief Goosen thinks Tiger Woods was exaggerating his pain level at the U.S. Open -- even after Woods announced that he would be having season-ending knee surgery, according to a London Times report.

After Monday's 19-hole playoff, Goosen told the newspaper, "It just seemed that when he hit a bad shot his knee was in pain and on his good shots he wasn't in pain. You see when he made the putts and he went down on his knees and was shouting, 'Yeah,' his knee wasn't sore.

"Nobody really knows if he was just showing off or if he was really injured. I believe if he was really injured, he would not have played."

On Wednesday, Woods announced that he would have ACL surgery and said he has a double stress fracture in his left leg. Even after those statements, Goosen, also a U.S. Open champion, didn't entirely back off of his earlier comments.

"I was being light-hearted," Goosen told the Times on Wednesday. "No one but Tiger himself knows how badly hurt he was. But if he was really badly hurt, he would have withdrawn, wouldn't he?" Woods' swing coach, Hank Haney, said Wednesday that the recovery time should be six to eight months. Woods did not say when he would have the surgery.

Thats the type of crap that comes out of someone's mouth when they are having a shitty year.

Tiger probably made more money in that tournament then Goosen has made all year.

He's in my Davis Love III and Charles Howell category. Boring and probably gay.

It was a little ridiculous for Goosen to get himself in this mess..For one thing he's always been a low key soft spoken player who doesn't seem like the type to make that kind of statement..More than likely what happened was the media probably asked him one too many questions about Tiger..I think the other golfers on the tour get tired of doing interviews about Tiger instead of themselves..And in a moment of frustation somebody says something stupid..I'm surprised it doesn't happened more often..I've seen the frustration on their faces during press interviews when I hear the same old question "do you think you have a chance in this tournament against Tiger?" Sabattini and Garcia in particular. Having said that, I don't think it was an excuse for Goosen..But it probably all came to a head when the press kept asking these players about Tiger even after the tournament was over..It's bad enough playing 4 days of golf on a U.S. Open course. And the frustration of not being able to beat a player with one leg probably got to him.

Goose is right dead on the money here. I knew when Tiger had hit a great shot, it was when he would exagerate the pain the most. Not ONE TIME did he agonize in pain on a bad shot.

I am an expert in this, I see it routinely at all levels of tennis. IF he was in true pain he wouldnt not have been able to go. IT helps that golf is at an all time low right now, also think he sabbotaged the match, I think he could have won by several if so desired.

The world according to Rail...now he is an expert physician...if you knew he could win by several, why did you bet against him with all that fake monopoly money of yours...everytime you open your mouth about golf, you will always be blamed for global warming....

Why do you think he isn't coming back until next year Dr. Railbird??

Knee expert says Woods faces six to 12 months out.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tiger Woods is likely to be sidelined for between six and 12 months after having reconstructive surgery on his left knee, according to a sports medicine expert.

The American world number one, who ended his 2008 campaign two days after winning the U.S. Open on Monday, also needs time off to rehabilitate a double stress fracture of his left tibia.

"I think it's something he will be able to recover from," Dr. Michael Maloney, who specialises in knee injuries at the University of Rochester Medical Centre, told Reuters on Thursday.

"Without knowing the specifics of the extent of the rest of the structures in his knee that may be damaged, it's hard to predict completely.
"But from a reconstructive standpoint of the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), he should be able to rehabilitate and get back out there.

"Usually the recovery time is of the order of six to 12 months. People get back to their sporting activities after around six months but for a full recovery and muscle strength and balance and endurance, they may take a full year or so."

Woods stunned the golfing world by announcing on Wednesday that he tore his knee ligaments 11 months ago, after last year's British Open at Carnoustie. He opted not to have surgery, deciding instead to play through the pain.

Against all the odds, he went on to pile up 10 wins worldwide in 13 starts, including seven consecutive victories, before shutting down his 2008 season after his third U.S. Open triumph.

Although Woods suffered a double stress fracture in his left shinbone two weeks before the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, he ignored medical advice to rest for six weeks in his bid for another major title.

Throughout the tournament, he played down the level of pain he experienced and went on to claim a remarkable victory in a playoff with fellow American Rocco Mediate, sealing his 14th major title at the 91st hole.

LONG-TERM DAMAGE

Although there has been speculation Woods may have incurred long-term damage by defying doctor's advice, Maloney disagreed.

"I am sure that they (Woods and his advisers) weighed the risks and the benefits of that decision and gauged how symptomatic he was," he said in a telephone interview.

"He just needs time and the reconstructive procedure for the joint will help in trying to get the muscle and all the forces across that joint back to as normal a situation as possible."

Woods has already had three surgeries on his left knee. In 1994, he had a benign tumour removed, followed by arthroscopic surgery in December 2002.

Two days after finishing second at this year's Masters, in mid-April, he had further arthroscopic surgery to clean out cartilage in the knee.
Woods, whose 200-kph swing is the fastest on the PGA Tour, has long been aware of the vulnerability of his left knee.

When striving for extra distance, he has tended to snap his left leg straight just before impact, a move he has worked hard to alleviate by softening his swing.

"Golf has a very strong, forceful motion in the knee and it is a significant transfer of weight to help generate the power for the swing," said Maloney, a physician consultant for the Professional Golfers' Association of America.

"You do it hundreds of thousands of times a week, it's going to add up over time. Tiger's a leading athlete who plays at a very high level and the stresses that he puts on all of his joints are pretty high.

"It's always a risk when someone has a knee injury but I would speculate that it's probably not that significant of an outcome, for him."

:think2::think2::think2::think2:

Goose said just the opposite of what your saying...........

After Monday's 19-hole playoff, Goosen told the newspaper, "It just seemed that when he hit a bad shot his knee was in pain and on his good shots he wasn't in pain.

You and Goose better get your stories straight before you go to court.

Rory Sabbatini and Retief Goosen could partner together and play best ball against Tiger and still lose.

Hypocrites, this guy made the purses their cashing in on.

Goosens comments are ridiculous. Woods will skip the next two majors. He played this one on one leg. He would never skip majors if he could help it, as we just saw, he went out at the US Open when he should not have. He needs to get healthy.
